Avast Mail scanner service not running - but working :-)
« on: November 15, 2004, 09:55:23 PM »
I the services list I have "avast! mail scanner" (automatic, but not running) and in the event log I have "The avast! Mail Scanner service terminated with the following error:
Cannot create a file when that file already exists. "

I this because I have used the flag to scan mail the old way (using 127.0.0.1) and can I set the "avast! mail scanner" service to "manual" or "disabled" then (as it is only starting, writing an error to the log and stopping again now anyway)?

I can't see the "network scanner" service there either, what is that called?

I don't quite understand the question. Whatever method of scanning you use (transparent or using the 127.0.0.1 trick), the avast Mail Scanner service NEEDS to be running. Without it, no mail scanning can be achieved (except for Outlook or TheBat scanning which is handled by specialized plugins).

In short, this service IS the Internet Mail provider. If you stop this provider, the service will be stoped. If you restart the provider, the service will be restarted. Makes sense?

Thanks

Are you sure. It has no "Started" next to it. But still I get the "On-Access" detailed info ech time an e-mail goes in or out from my mail program. So how does this work then :-)

Can the service be started somewhere else to (this XP installation is upgraded from 98, maybe the mail-scanner service is started somewere else, a leftover from Win98)?

I have the following processes running in "taskmanager":

ashDisp.exe, ashMaiSv.exe, ashServ.exe, ashUpdSv.exe

ashMaiSv.exe is it.

Maybe it's somewhere in your Startup entries and hence the service (which is now the correct way of starting this program) doesn't start.

Please try using msconfig to find out if ashMaiSv is being started like this, and if so, remove it from the list of startup programs. You should be using the new service mechanism instead (it is more flexible and allows you to start/stop it at your will).

Cheers

Vlk, must the service be on 'Automatic' or 'Manual' start?
I mess it  :-[ and do not remember the right setting...

It's set to Manual by default.
The Internet Mail provider controls it (starts and stops it) itself - according to its own status.

Still trouble. I deleted the "ashmaisv.exe" entry in the "Run" section in the registry (as it's a real service in XP), but it keep reappearing (like avast! is putting it back). Explanation?

Is there some backup of the settings, or some setting in the avast.ini or in the Access-database that causes this?

Or does avast! still think it's running on Win98 :-)
Nah...  I have uninstalled and reinstalled it at least once.

The registry key is:  HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Update: I haven't even rebooted, and the entry is back :-)
So some process must put it back. Help. This is spooky :-)

BTW:  Should the "ashDisp.exe" still be in the "Run" entry of the registry (that's the trayicon, right) or is that to started from the services (and what services should be "Automatic" and "Manual"?)?

Mine it's not a service...
It's here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
