Problems with CD Drive!
« on: November 16, 2004, 01:33:32 AM »
For some reason my CD rom drive has died. When i put a cd inside nothing seems to happen.

When i put a music cd in it won`t play. The sound on the computer is working fine. Cd`s don`t seem to work any more. I get no error messages.

However,I put a computer game in and it said:

"the cd wasn't in the drive".

In device manger the cd drive is listed but has a yellow circle next to it with a black! inside it.

i deleted the device and rebooted. Problem remains, i`m using XP hom edition SP2.

In the device status box for the cd drive it says:

"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

please help.

The same message appears next to the DVD Drive

Try the drive in another system. if it fails there also, the drive is broken.

the cd drive is working following the advice given here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=314060

However, when i try burning cd`s in media player it says:

"no cd or dvd burner has been selected"

any ideas?

What happens if you try to burn with Nero?

same message!

i looked in device manager, and it says the c drive "this device is working properly".

There are no yellow circles etc, and no error codes next to the c drive or dvd drive!

Looks like it's time to send it to the large circular container (bin) and get another drive!

Before you do, make sure that the ide cable and power cable are secure. If they are and it still doesn't work, it has most probably turned it's feet skywards!

It can be a damaged OS also.

Try the drive in another system.

the cd drive still works, it still plays music cd`s ok, i can still watch DVD`S and play computer games. It just won`t burn cd`s. I now get a message saying, something like:

"the cd might not be blank or may be damaged, also try another brand"

This doesn't mean the drive can't be broken. Try him in another system like I suggested.

Omar I'm confused now,
you can watch dvd's and listen to cd's.  Is it a combo drive, dvd writer or cd writer?

You could have a problem with your o.s (as Eddy prevoiusly posted) your burning software or the drive itself.  Let us know what drive it is (make and model number) and the software you are using to burn cd's please.

Quick edit

could also be bad media.

The computer is made by "Time" and it is a combo drive. I have always used Media Player to burn cd`s! I downloaded the latest media player version 10. About 6% of a song i want to burn gets burned, then it says "could not be completed" then it suggests trying another brand of cd or that the cd may not be blank.

I`m trying some blank cd`s that i have not used before, they are 52x, could that be a problem.? Should i resort back to using 48x?

@ Omar,

why not try swapping a couple of your disks with a friend and try this.

Try to burn the first disk your normal way through wmp

Burn the second with Nero or Roxio (both have trial versions) as Eddy previously posted

This should help narrow down the problem.

Did you ever use this drive to burn any cd's? How long ago was it when you last used it for that purpose? Are you sure it's able to burn CD's at all? What are it's specs?
