Mail scanner module wont start!

Well it starts, but not fully - the name of the module in the main window is grayed and a message to the right says that it is waiting for some subsystem to start. And the mail scanning isn't working, of course (no information popus in right bottom corner, no "Mail clean" message in e-mails....]. But when I terminate this half-started module and then start it again, everything is fine and working! How is that possible? It's the latest version....

Sounds like a bug, really.

Please try the following patch:

1. Stop the avast antivirus service (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services)
2. Download the file http://www2.asw.cz/~vlk/ahresmai.zip and extract its contents to the avast directory (overwrite existing files)
3. Restart the avast antivirus service

That should help. Please let me know if it does.

I attempted to stop the avast! antivirus services and got the following error message:
"Could not stop the Avast antivirus service on local computer."
Error 1053 the service did not respond in a timely manner
But the a icon had a red mark, hovering showed no providers running..??

Well it probably stoped then - just try to overwrite the files and see if it succeeds.

I have a similar problem and tried the fix you recommended.  My Outlook/Exchange provider STILL is "waiting for a subsystem to start."  Any ideas as to what subsystem it might be waiting for, and how to get it started?

what do you use as email client?

If it's Outlook XP or 2003, please go to Outlook's About box, click Disabled Items and make sure avast is not on the list.

Make sure the Outlook plugin is installed.

Outlook -> Tools menu -> Options -> Other -> Advanced Options -> Add-In Manager

Do you see the avast plugin splash screen when starting Outlook then?

Yes, that does appear briefly.
