Now the provider has started.  Does the provider not start until after Outlook has been started, or does it start automatically upon logon?  It is the latter, isn't it?

See it this way. The provider only starts when it is needed. Why running if you have Outlook closed and there is nothing to protect/scan?

It's the former. The Outlook/Exchange provider is only active when Outlook is running.

Outlook is the "subsystem" it is waiting for ;)

I thought I remembered that all six providers started up automatically upon logon.  My mistake, and I apologize for needlessly taking up your time.

Cheers,

Thank-you Vlk! ...for this little gem because it fixed my "Provider won't start" problem.

I'm running:
OS: WIN98 SE
Mail client: OUTLOOK 2000 (v9.0.0.6627)
SpamFilter: SpamBully (v2.0.0.89)
avast! version: 4.5.523 official release

I never knew the "Add-In Manager" menu even existed in Outlook:

It all makes sense now. I remember seeing a little red flag in the blue avast! taskbar ball yesterday. Sometime during a reboot while Outlook was trying to startup I vaguely recall seeing a brief warning message saying something about "avast! plug-in" being unplugged, disconnected, or something, and another message about a possible MAPI32 file being overwritten and possibly having a compatibility error.

I tried several things including Repairing Outlook 2000, re-installing .523, and even installing avast! beta .531 to no avail! I'm also running SpamBully 2.0.0.89 and was getting ready to disable it when I found your post in the forum.

For me your instructions for going into OUTLOOK 2000's "Add-In Manager" and placing a checkmark by "avast! 4" got everything going again.

Later I'll have to light-up my XP w/SvcPk2 machine and see how that goes.

Many thanks!

Make sure the Outlook plugin is installed.

Outlook -> Tools menu -> Options -> Other -> Advanced Options -> Add-In Manager

Thanks
