Hi,

I would like to install Avast Business in a server which has Windows 2003 Server and MS Sql Server 8.00.760 version. I have read that installation checks if you have SQL Server EE (Express Edition?) 2008R2 and if you do not have it, it's installed. I have some databases of software I we use in the company so, the question is: Is there any problem with MS Sql Server if I install Avast Business in the server? Will it be updated correctly?

I am thinking of trying the installation in a virtual machine before to see what happen.

Thanks in advance.

No there is no problem with your actual SQL, avast business console will install a new istance of SQL express 2008 only for avast.
(In my case I've some istances of SQL 2005 and avast use the SQL 2008 without problems).

its a bit more work to it then giogio says (no offense meant)

the installer has 2 options
- install with sql 2008 r2 express
or
- install on your own sql server

if you choose the first option, sql 2008 express will be downloaded. I am not sure if the express version can run on the same machine as the sql 2008 server that you mention. I do not think so tho.

if you choose the second option, then you have to point the installer to the sql machine but you have to give in the instance that you want to have avast install its database in. The avast installer does NOT create a new instance, only a new database in the instance that you tell the installer to install too.

if you care about other databases and security, you should installed a new instance on the SQL server (im not too much into sql server yet, so dont know for sure if you can limit windows accounts to access only specific databases in an instance) next to that your development databases instance can be cleaned and restarted without consequences to the avast production database.

@Wpn
Thank's for clarification, ;)

however the version 8.00.760 of braakiss is SQL 2000 SP3a
http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/john-savills-windows-faqs/how-can-i-determine-which-version-of-microsoft-sql-server-i-m-running-
then is not SQL 2008... avast will install SQL 2008EE R2

Wpn as giogio says the version of my MS Sql server is 2000 sp3. In any case, I am installing a w2003 server in virtual box to try what the installation does, just in case :)

Thanks you

my bad, just quickly assumed the versioning was consistent with the newest server

just a little note on the side: you do know that MS stopped all support on sql 2000 sp3 in 2007 and sql 2000 sp4 in 2008?
if there are no non-convertable databases in there that cant run on 2008, i would strongly advise to upgrade
(also because then i wouldnt look like a fool when ranting :P)
