About disk defrag and scan
« on: November 16, 2004, 09:21:05 PM »
These days I have noticed that it takes hours to scan my computer for errors and perform a disk defrag. And the problem is that the above processes restart again and again. What does this mean?Lately I have tried again to scan my computer for errors and perform a disk defrag but they were not completed. What should I do solve this problem?
Thanks a lot  for your invaluable help.

Could your hard drive be corrupt?

What make/model is it?

Visit the manufacturers website for some diagnostic tools.

Although before running any you should backup all your files.

You need to terminate all processes except Explorer and one or two more...
Use Process Explorer 8.52 to do it. I couldn't ever run defrag or scandisk without using it...

FAT32 is total crap compared to NTFS. This also includes interuption of defragging process. On NTFS partitions you can use OS normally and defragging at the same time. Also data integriti is much much better.

Hence I will download Process Explorer8.52 and run it. Is this all? Or is there something else I should be careful about?

You can simply run defrag while in safe mode.

First, boot into Safe mode, then run Disk Cleanup and delete files, run Scan Disk(thorough), then Defrag, Restart.
