ping.exe
« on: November 12, 2011, 02:59:31 AM »
I keep getting this popup from Avast. It comes up every 10 minutes or so, blocks around 25 links, then stops.

I ran a scan which came up empty. I can provide any info needed. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It isn't unusual for malware to use legit programs to try to access malicious sites, but this is the first time I have seen ping.exe used.

We can't see the site name /.../ the information is concatenated, however that isn't too important as it is obviously considered malicious by avast. Given it has those ? parameters after it I don't know if it is some sort of adware as it seems like product searches.

- This needs further analysis by a malware removal specialist:
Go to this topic http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 for information on Logs to assist in cleaning malware. Use the information about getting and using the logs and attach the logs here, not in the LOGS topic.

Hopefully someone can take a look at it, but it may be later today as it is 2:50am in the UK and our expert will be in bed. But if you can run the scans and post the logs he will have something to work with.

Thank you for the reply. I'll post the logs in a sec and hopefully someone can help.

You're welcome.

Unfortunately there aren't too many qualified to analyse the logs and compile a fix. That's me for the night too almost 3am now.

You're welcome.

Unfortunately there aren't too many qualified to analyse the logs and compile a fix. That's me for the night too almost 3am now.

The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan's taking a while. So far it's found something like 480 infected files.  ???

Edit: Just uploaded the Malwarebytes log and the aswMBR log. It says the OTL log is too large to upload here :/

Edit again:

It is now getting at svchost.exe...

Edit once again: clip2net.com/clip/m85965/1321070747-otl-txt-138kb.txt
Here's the OTL.txt. I uploaded it with clip2net since it wouldn't upload with the post. :/

Avast has blocked 83 threats and they're coming in every few minutes. Malwarebytes is also picking up incoming and outgoing traffic. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is much more common to see them use svchost.exe.

The adware stuff removed by MBAM (I assume that you rebooted ?) whilst a lot of entries, is probably of a lessor degree of seriousness. The aswMBR log does show that it needs further investigation by a specialist (I have PM'd essexboy to see if he can take a look at this) and may be what is responsible for the other new detections using svchost.exe to connect.

So now the important thing is for you to get the OTL log attached so essexboy has that to work with. The 138KB OTL log should fit as an attachment in its own post, the problem was the cumulative size of all three of your attachments exceeded the 200KB maximum.

OK, I cut out the middle man and downloaded it rather than wait for you to get back on-line.

For essexboy, this attached OTL.txt file is the OP's log.

Thanks for the help. And sorry about the OTL log, I tried a few times and it kept saying the file was too big..

Thank you David  ;D

I feel this may be a modified variant of consrv so lets go straight to the big boy

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.[/b]
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Comp's running fine so far, no threats detected in the last 10 minutes. Thank you so much, and I'll update if anything else pops up.  ;D

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    Quote
    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
     [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled
Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Your Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

 Upgrading Java:
  • Go to this site  and click Do I have Java
  • It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ?Keep safe

Well that's not good. Avast hasn't picked up anything and the scan was empty, so I'm hoping this is only a stray thing. :/

Edit: Just got some outgoing and incoming stuff :/

As it was an incoming it may well have been a random ping on the offchance of finding an usecured computer

Could you monitor it for a bit and let me know if it happens again
