Infected with Java Agent-ZT not detected by Avast!
« on: November 12, 2011, 03:34:34 AM »
Today at boot-up my WIN7-SP1 64Bit Dell PC went haywire with all kinds of HDD and memory errors, win explorer fail to load and Video driver also reported error, only a splash screen imitating "Win Restore" screen asking to scan system pop-up,then the "buy" botton show up,it was then I realize this was an attack and not win7/pc crashing, also firewall "Zone alarm" intersected a 'outgoing' connection to a weird site I rejected right away.

ran Avast @ boot up and found Bayfraud -z in my 'sent' email box,(from what I read I concluded this is not the problem I think)and removed to quarantine, but same symptoms persist and splash screen returned after boot up, then was able to get to the 'task manager' and found a weird unknown "waisutwaocnt.exe" loaded file in there and disabled it.

After reboot multiple errors alarms and Splash screen disappeared but window explorer doesn't work and can't access any of my files,..

Ran Avast from win7 and then found the Java-agent-z virus which i placed in lock box for now.

twice Win7 restore/points didn't work, error finding a file needed it says, and "safe mode" doesn't work either.. same issue, I can't see any of my documents with Win7 explorer, even though they are there in my HDD because Avast scanned all of them without any reported errors..I can't launch any software either, as the "Start" menu directories shows all programs as containing "Empty" files..

In my limited knowledge I figure this virus damaged my Registry/win-explorer and I need to "repair" from the original win7 disk, (tried repair from boot menu didn't work either)but my disk is the plain w7 not the win7 sp1 updated version I'm using now..so I'm not sure if I should try this..

Anyone here has any suggestions/tips/advice? or a link with info related to my infection/symptoms?

I have no idea how this virus thru my defenses, anyone knows how that was possible?

Thanks

Sounds ugly.  Like a zero-access rootkit or something similar.

Anyway, see this guide>>http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0, and then post the resulting logs as attachments back here.
Essexboy will have a look at them when he is online (UK time), and then tell you what to do next.

I had to use a thumb drive to run the software and move the logs files to this spare pc,

Further observation..when I was saving the log files to the thumb drive, the new window displays my "hidden" Libraries, but not from the regular Start>computer, here they are missing, also my desktop is all black missing all the shortcuts... if that helps .. :'(

Hi there lets kill this and get your files/folders back

Download RogueKiller to your desktop

  • Quit all running programs
  • For Vista/Seven, right click -> run as administrator, for XP simply run RogueKiller.exe
  • When prompted, type 6 and validate
  • The RKreport.txt shall be generated next to the executable.
  • If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not work (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe

Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next Reply.

THEN

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    Quote
    :OTL
    O3 - HKU\S-1-5-21-1531545290-68836725-4220622017-1001\..\Toolbar\WebBrowser: (no name) - {21FA44EF-376D-4D53-9B0F-8A89D3229068} - No CLSID value found.

    [2011/11/11 14:29:41 | 000,000,659 | -H-- | M] () -- C:\Users\Mack Mackado\Desktop\System Restore.lnk

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
FINALLY

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.[/b]
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

First off , thanks a millions Essexboy, there was no way i could've fixed this infection without your help, you even created a personalized batch file, wow!  :o

I'm using my W7 right now and everything is pretty much back to normal as far as I can tell for now, tested a few of my regular apps and they seem to work fine.all desktop icons are back, programs/files are available even my Dell Dock is back to normal..

I had to reset a few win-explorer settings that reverted to default, like on the task bar/start bottom and desktop background etc but no big issue.

also Looks like a couple of programs will need to be re-installed/upgraded.

Soluto-a boot monitor util- is not loading, and Power DVD is not working,(I will re-install from OEM disk) and my backup software, 'Cobian' is not loading/working properly, but I had to upgrade it anyways...so

I have a few quick questions

What is the exact name of this virus?

Any ideas how it went through my Avast/Zone Alarm defenses?

I'd like to know to make sure this doesn't happen again, I'm kind of paranoid now...'cause I've never been infected before since the net came along in the mid 90's.

I run avast's full scan  every week and when 'disable' for any install I pull the wall plug.

Should I run an Avast's "Boot Scan" at every boot?

I use this PC for many tasks and even though the data is backed up(internal/external)starting from scratch will be a major time-consuming pain...

Here are the log files..

RogueKiller says it all  ;D it failed to recover about six shortcuts though

¤¤¤ Infection : Fake HDD  ¤¤¤

This malware changes almost hourly - AV companies just cannot keep up with them

Probably a drive by download from an infected site, - so it must be new to get past webshield as that it the strongest point in your defence
If you use Firefox then get noscript and for IE set the javascript to disabled

A sweep for orphans now I feel and a final check for any other problems

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.[/b]

THEN

Confirm that windows updates work and no other anomolies are present.... When you are happy and subject to no other problems I will remove my tools

Ran Mbam, no issues found, windows updater runs fine, last update installed last night.(even though sys was not clean yet)

I actually ran Mbam on 10-17-11 to check before this virus event and everything was fine. I was actually getting Blu screen Kernel-power 41 errors while at sleep mode,(I thought of infection) after researching I fixed it by removing a second (unbeknown to me) Audio driver (AMD) that apparently was conflicting.(Still not 100% sure)

few questions

Should i delete all viruses in Avast virus chest?

Sys Config-> startup still displays the disable file waisutwaocnt.exe that was loading "fake HDD Alert" how to remove this from there? just in case...

I also removed a 'startup file called "spirune" at the same time, don't know if this is part of the virus, but it sounds bad..

I will re-install "noscript", I stopped using it about a year ago 'cause it was creating some issues with some sites, but I rather deal with that than another attack.

Should I update to IE9?, I don't use it 'cause some past versions conflicted with my Roxio Creator software, but MS keep insisting that is a "critical" update...  ::)

Here is the last MBAM log, I'm going to update a few more things around here now since I'm on a roll now ;)

PS: Should I remove this log file fromhere later too?

Yep

Two ways - First remove the tick and run an OTL scan so that I can kill it, or second download revo uninstaller go to the tools section > Autoruns and remove it from there http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Should I update to IE9
Absolutely, as IE is an integral part of windows.  Also the security has been beefed and and. in my opinion, is now more secure than Firefox
Quote

If you wish - your choice

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    Quote
    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Remove ComboFix

  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the "x" and "/") then click OK

  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled
Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

 Upgrading Java:
  • Go to this site  and click Do I have Java
  • It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version
SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

  • Go to Control Panel and select System
  • Select System
  • On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create
Now we can purge the infected ones
  • GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
  • Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
  • Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.  Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ?

Keep safe

Thanks again Essexboy for your continued help and advice..

I installed Revo, but it didn't list the un-ticked 'waisutwaocnt.exe' file in the auto-run section, then I tried CCleaner that I use frequently on this PC and it was listed, and then deleted it.I had forgotten all about this feature of Ccleaner.

Ran you OTL batch, this process went fine, but I misspelled the 'run' command for 'Combofix' removal (unistall instead of uninstall) and combofix launched into the scan mode again, since I can't stop the process I let it run and at near the end of the process, the PC suddenly crashed into blue screen and reboot, the 'event-viewer' report was the same Kernel-power 41 error I've been getting for a couple of weeks (during sleep mode)but the system booted back up fine and seems to be working fine so far. regarding this issue I still need to open-up this pc to re-seat all the cards and mem chips, clean-up etc..but...

After correcting the mistake "combofix ' was "removed successfully"

Ran OTL 'clean' and removed everything, including a couple of the log files saved in the same desktop Dir. needed to reboot manually though, probably 'cause it was running on Avast sandbox?

Coincidentally last nite I upgraded Java and Installed MS-Explorer9, maybe E9 upgrade will cure another weird behavior of late, when sometimes Win-Explorer stopped working and warn that it needs to Re-start again, seems to be working fine right now..

Created new 'clean restore point' and deleted the old ones..

Installed FireFox 'no script' plugin again, but it's a pain to 'customize' it :-\

I use MBAM manually. but will set a auto-scan schedule to be sure..

I heard/knew of FileHippo updater software (and others) but was always hesitant to allow any of them to scan and send results out, Do you think is safe?

Edit: W7 reports that both Avast and Defender anti-spyware are running, and then warn of 'performance' issues if both are running, should I disable 'Defender' then? and if so how?

Essexboy, everything is working fine, just did a MBAm full scan and everything is clean.

Installed filehippo and updated a few non critical items, everything fine except for  a  Java-reader upgrade afterward YOUtube videos do not load using Firefox, I'm trying to figure this out 'cause the YOUTUBE videos work fine from different hosting sites on FF and work fine if using other browsers,so I think the problem is with Firefox...

I had to disable Noscript though, this addon just blocks everything, and then I'm supposed to give 'rights' to a dozen different requests on every page I visit, and guess who's good or bad ?, it's just too complicated....unless I'm missing something? :-\

Thanks again for all your help.
