Following a statment from Vlk in one of the threads the only Clients if You have to use SSL are Bat and Outllook.
Here the Statement from Vlk:
"Bat users should probably use the plugin (the same applies to Outlook users) because it has certain advantages - protection of SSL-enabled accounts for example."
