Which scan is the best to use. boot or full?
« on: November 26, 2011, 04:06:58 AM »
Hi guys, which is the best scan to use. Boot time scan, or Full scan? I usually use both, but is it really necessary?

Well the boot scan shouldn't have to be used unless avast recommends it for certain cleaning procedures, i just use the default full scan once a week with pup's turned on.

Thank you craigb for your reply.
What I want to know, is, which of the two, is more effective. And, is it necessary to run both?

Both scans are very effective but serve a different purpose. The boot scan checks for items before Windows loads and therefore also before malware can become active and defend itself.

The shields should keep your machine clean and the quick or full scans will check and inform if a problem is present. As Craig said avast may suggest you use the boot scan if an issue is found.

Is it necessary to run both? No, is the simple answer. I check with a boot scan once every couple of months or if I feel there may be something wong.

The normal full scan is sufficient and as i already mentioned you dont need to run both unless avast detects something and tells you that you need to schedule a boot scan.

screen saver scan......and if you dont use that, a quick scan a week is plenty
remember the file shield is running in the background all time scanning any file that move...

only if something is detected by screen saver scan / quick scan / file shield, then i run a full scan

Boot time scan i only use if avast have problems removing the bug...or if avast say so

I use the boot time scan when ever a new version of avast! is released.
Ver. 4 then Ver. 5 and the last one when Ver. 6 was released.

Since the last boot time scan, the on demand and the rest of the built in sevices
have scanned everything new or changed as it happens.

I see no point in wasting my time doing weekly, monthly or any other time consuming scans.

I'll be doing my next boot time scan when avast! 7 gets released.

To each their own. This has worked very well for me for many years.  :)

Thank you to all the people that made the time to reply. I appreciate it.
I want a computer that is as secure as a computer can be, one step short of not having a computer.
Virus, is an apt description of what it does. It is a sickness that not only renders a perfectly good machine to function poorly, but has the capacity to inflict damage to humans as well, by gaining information, and using that to further gain. ( usually money, but also power. )
Not made by clever young kids, as one might imagine, but by cyber criminals, some of whom have (bot) control over 1000000 computers.
The best defense I have been able to come up with, so far, is, as follows:
Avast! free antivirus
Comodo Firewall (stand alone)
Malwarebytes
Ad Muncher
Snitch Plus
PrivacyEraser Pro  (settings to 20 overwrites, change filename, reset to zero bytes)
CCleaner           (settings to 35 passes)

Maintenance:
Keep everything updated at all times. (Browser, antivirus programs...everything.)
Delete all System Restore points, except the latest one. ( reason is, that,  system restore points often house a yet unrecognized virus, and albeit, your updated Avast! has since found and eradicated the virus, it remains in your System Restore point. )

Modem kept off when not online.
At the end of every Browsing session, I run all these programs, I run Avast! Full Scan, then Avast Boot time Scan.

But, I don't know...if running a Boot scan negates running a Full scan.

so after every Browsing session you have an hour+ with scanning to do   ???
This is what we call paranoid behavior......
not necessary as avast is doing a background scan of every file that move when you use the computer

The boot-time scanner is an expert feature, and was designed to be used when there’s something bad going on on the system.......

That is a definite sign of paranoid behavior.

I would only have CCleaner do one pass.

A Boot scan does the same as a Full scan.

A Boot scan does the same as a Full scan.
Since the boot scan starts before a lot of the files and services are loaded,
it has access to files not available to the full scan.  :)

As mentioned by VLK, it requires some expertise and additional cautions but is more thorough
than a full scan.
