Update to 6.0.1367 has broken web browsing
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:38:28 PM »
Avast free, Windows XP, Static IP

All was fine with previous version of Avast when computer turned off this morning.

On boot this evening program update to 6.0.1367 was automatically offered so I accepted and all apeared to update happily and re-boot as normal no error messages seen.

No other changes.

Subsequent to the update web browing doesn't work in either firefox nor IE.

Ping to the network works, Ping to the internet works.
Browse computers on internal network works.

Web pages on the network (router & modem control page) give no response.
No web brosing on any internet site.

This posted from a laptop which hasn't been updated.

Any clues or assistance gratefully received.

have you tried avast repair and reboot ?

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

I have now tried Repair and re-booted - no change in symptoms.

Web browsing still not working.

Firewall? Firewall rules? Delete them. They should be re-created after the program update.

What are your EXPERT settings in Avast web shield?

web scan expert settings are
enable web scanning
scan traffic from well known processes only

however the symptoms do not seem to be affected by these controls.

Incidenly it is still possible to run minecraft so the machine is definitely talking to the internet. Web brosing still won't.

As suggested just been playing with the firewall and ......

thank you very much I now feel even sillier than usual.

Turning off firewall re-booting, re-enabling and re-booting and all is happy and glad.

Thank you very much.
