No problems with autoupdates here...
Are you using a dial-up or DSL?
Have you set the Update tabs of the settings?

I am on dialup. Updates always set to auto - but they wont. i get a red error box each time and have to update manually. No probs with previous version. only new 4.5 ver.
i have dwnldd 4.5 seperately as a precaution. should i uninstall Avast completely then try to install the new version? Or leave it alone. i have copied the virus chest file just in case. If so can i use my current registration key - valid till apr 05?
thanx

What OS do you have?
If you have a NT based system, what exact service pack?

(start > run > winver)

And then it works I suppose... Strange...

If you're on-line you can update without uninstalling.
Off-line, most probably you will need to uninstall it first.

i have copied the virus chest file just in case.

You can copy your avast4.ini file for comparison later.

If so can i use my current registration key - valid till apr 05?

Sure you can.

OK referring to updates. I started fresh and uninstalled the program. I  installed new version Home 4.5. and registered again. As b4 I still get the RED box
"Avast! Information"
[An error has occurred while attempting to update!
the summary says:
Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Cannot connect to download2.avast.com (66.98.252.36:80).
I am uptodate  current version 0447-1 - but had to do it manually.
Program Settings>Update(Basic) is set to automatic.

Something has changed to prevent Automatic Updates.
I had no problems with the previous version:

Should i attempt to reinstall the old version of Avast 4.
and see if the auto update works then?
My PC specs r the same. but i dont have SP 2 installed.
this looks like an Avast program error!!
I can live w/o auto updates but this is one of the best features of Avast!
any help here??

If you can manually update, so it's not a firewall issue.
Can you make the delay for automatic update a little bit greater (60 seconds for instance)?
See 'Settings' on my signature (value AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds)

No need for that but if you want, uninstall 4.5 first, boot, install 4.1.

It's a pity and a problem...

You can help yourself updating to SP2.
It does not seem to be an avast problem. There is not update problems for the most of users.

have looked in registry and  isnt there. i have looked thru each Avast txt file. this is the Error log from the DATA folder: and found this:
21/11/2004   13:59:10   1101045550   Derek Nash   2500   ODBC function UPDATE LocalProperties SET Val = ? WHERE ((Property = 'ScanAreas') AND (Object = 1103739638)); failed. Error description: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Could not update; currently locked by user 'admin' on machine 'DEREK'..

Open Avast4.ini and change ODBC to XML, see if that is making a difference.

Sorry, add that line. If you read the 1st post in that thread you will see that I say this...
Not all the values are there by default. You must add them  ;)

I've got the exact problem with Auto Update too.
I'm using Windows XP2 and is on BroadBand connection but Auto Update just doesn't works. Keeps getting the RBOD [Red Box of Death] error...

Hello everybody!

I am facing same problem here also.  Using XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.

Perviously I have no problems with autoupdates at all.
It started 2 - 3 weeks ago (while I was still using ver 4.1).

Autoupdate tried to install ver 4.5, but failed.  I had to install manually instead.  The problem did not go away after the installation of ver 4.5.  Please help !!
