I've never had a problem with updating Avast Free using it's UI since I've been using it around version 4.8.x.  The only time I've ever overinstalled Avast is when a new beta came out.  There should be no need to jump thru the hoops you are, as most users aren't having such problems.

i7-3610QM 2.3GHZ, 8.0GB Ram,  Nvidia GeForce GT 630M 2GB, Win7 Pro SP1 64bit, IE 11
Common to both: Avast Premium Security 19.7.2388, WinPatrol Plus, SpywareBlaster 5.5, Opera 12.18, Firefox 68.0.2, MBam Free, CCleaner

What most users experience doesn't help me (or the other having the same problem).
My laptop is newly reinstalled completly (low level harddisk format).

Anyway, when a full new install on top of a failed update makes all OK,
then I would say it is the update that have messed up something.

Finding what other programs are common to those with problems may point to the culprit.  There's something that is common in the computer environment of those that are having problems that is causing the problem with Avast.

The systems has a minimum of installed resident programs and services.
Yes, they have ZA 4.5, but I have tried uninstalling that and that did not help.
And again: Why does a full install on top work, but an update not work?

Then, ZA is causing the problem.

The reason that a full install of Avast works is because it likely overwrites all it's files that are left, and only then will ZA recognize the changes.

Any attempt to uninstall ZA without also using it's removal tool and then rebooting is not sufficient.  Even then, there can be ZA files left behind that must be removed manually.

I used ZA a few years ago when it was light and not intrusive.  I cannot remember what version caused me to remove it, but I was using AVG along with it.  Switched firewalls, and things worked fine for another year or two.  AVG became bloated and sometimes required a reboot for a simple definitions update, and started causing problems, and it was replaced by Avast Home v4.x.x.

This is ZA 4.5.
Before it had all the other extra stuff.
It's a pure firewall.
Doesn't stop anything else.

Also I know how to completly remove ZA.
And I even check file-system and registry.
All services, driver and programs are gone.

If it's all gone, then you shouldn't be having the problem. ;D
