notes for outbound mail
« on: November 20, 2004, 04:05:49 PM »
I'm running v4.5 Home Edition and would like to know if it is possible to use separate notes for inbound and outbound mails with Outlook Express.  Specifically I would like to use either a generic note for outbound mails such as "This e-mail has been scanned by Avast v4.5" or have no note at all but still scan the message.  I still want to have detailed information in the note for an inbound message if a virus is detected, but I don't want to show all that detail to recipients of outbound messages.

Hi, left-click the blue 'a' ball in the sytem tray, click details>internet mail>customize; the settings are in the pop and smtp tabs.

HTH,
Delta.

I've seen the options, I just haven't seen a way to use a generic note (or no note at all) for outbound e-mails while using the standard/detailed note for inbound mails.  Maybe someone can give an example of how you could modify the note format to accomplish this.

Just select the smtp tab, click on "format of the notes", than double click the one you want to change.

As far as I can tell the same notes are used for infected inbound messages and infected outbound messages.  So if I change the notes for outbound messages to something generic, I will no longer get detailed notes in my infected inbound messages.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a simple way to have completely different notes for infected inbound messages and infected outbound messages.

You have to edit each Tag seperately.
Take another look at the picture.

#1 is for your clean mail message depending if you use HTML or Text.
#2 is for your infected mail message depending if you use HTML or Text.

Sorry to step in the thread, but I think the answers are not realy tagging the question of jon_doe.

The question is if it is possible to have different notes for incoming and outgoing mails - as far as I know the answer is No, the same notes are used for Outgoing and Incoming messages. Pls correct me if I'm wrong.

I have it somewhat working the way I want with the following syntax for my infected mail notes.  However I don't see a way to change the note that gets added to the subject of an infected e-mail, and it doesn't look like I can include parameters such as %ATTACH% in the value for the %INBOUND parameter.

%TYPE%
%OUTBOUND=This message was scanned by Avast! v4.5%
%INBOUND=Avast! v4.5 detected a virus in this message%

By default, they are the same.
That's why I post explains how that can be changed. :)

Hi Bob,
I tried it now and see the following (using Internet Mail):
- I changed in POP the text for one of the tags (i.e. HTML clean)
- then I switched to SMTP, selected again the same tag (HTML clean) and the previous changed note appeares

hmmm,  there is no possibility in the tags to define which part is used for Out or In - so the same tag is used. May be I'm completly lost ??

I still want to have detailed information in the note for an inbound message if a virus is detected, but I don't want to show all that detail to recipients of outbound messages.

I have only been using Avast for about an hour so I may be wrong, but ...

... there is an option not to send an infected mail, which seems the sensible course of action, so noone will ever receive a message with the detailed report.

Problem solved  ;D

PS I have just checked and you actually have to select to send an infected message, though why anyone should want to beats me.

And that would be fine except what I'm seeing while testing with the eicar.com file is that the message is cleaned by deleting the attachment but the notes are still added to the message subject and body.  So the recipient is notified that a virus was present in the original message, which I think can lead to a lot of confusion.

Not if you delete the incoming message notification before you forward the e-mail. ;D

The current edit is only for the POP3 portion. (Incoming mail)
If you now select SMTP Tag, you can do the same for the outbound mail. ;D
