Email scanning
« on: November 20, 2004, 06:45:13 PM »
Hi all

I am new to this forum and also to Avast. I have just downloaded Avast 4.5 on to my compouter Win 98 SE using IE6 And OE6 and would like some advice

How do I know if my emails are being scanned? All I can see is an icon in the bottom right on the task bar which when the mouse pointer is on will tell you which isp is being connected to. I can send and receive emails from all 3 different isp but there is nothing in the email or on screen to say if it is scanned.

Probably very basic but any advice would be helpful

Use the eicar test file to check. Use the search function on this board to find out more. This has been told in many threads already.

Thanks for the quick response.

Is there supposed to be an on screen message or symbol when scanning and should anything be written in the email eg" this email has been scanned by avast and is virus free"?

To be sure:

1) Is the avast icon (the special one of email scanning) be shown in the system tray?

2) Is your email header with the lines X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2004), Inbound message and X-Antivirus-Status: Clean? (Right click the message, choose Properties and Details)

3) Are clean notes added at the bottom of the email? (Internet Mail provider settings)

To answer your questions

1 The blue avast cicle with an 'a' in it is on the system tray stating 5 providers total 4 running. Why only 4?

2 Yes message headers has the details you typed

3 There are no additional notes in the email itself just the message

Hope this gives you some idea of what is going on

Thanks for your help

One of them is a plug-in: MS Outlook/Exchange. The plug-ins need that the main application to be running and them become active. For instance, open MS Outlook (not the Express).

2 Yes message headers has the details you typed

So your emails are being scanned.

3 There are no additional notes in the email itself just the message

But, did you configure the provider to add them?
Internet Mail provider > Customize > POP and SMTP tabs > Add a note into clean messages.

I don't have MS Outlook on my system I have always used Outlook Express.

At least the emails are being scanned coming in.

As for point 3 I can't see where I do this on my set up.

Thanks for your help.

Open the on-access control panel (blue ball with the "A")
than > Internet Mail provider > Customize > POP and SMTP tabs > Add a note into clean messages.
