None detection of Hard Disk
« on: November 20, 2004, 10:58:46 PM »
Hello, can someone help me, please.
I was so impressed with a friends AVAST BART that I have now purchased my own. However, I'm having a problem. Every time I boot with it, the program says "Local Hard Drive is not detected". I thought it might be because I am using Partition Magic but when I booted up on my daughters  computer, her HD was not detected either. I am XP Pro, she is XP Home. Any ideas would be appreciated - I am fairly new to computing.

What  controller are you using? IDE/SATA/SCSI?

If SATA or SCSI, you'll most likely need its drivers (you can usually download them from the vendor's website or you have them on a CD that came with the computer). Create the driver diskette (choose drivers for Windows XP) and when booting BART CD, press F6 and you'll be asked to supply the diskette.

Thanks

Hello,
Thank you for your response. My controller is IDE. I forgot to mention that I am on AVAST BART v2. My system has SP2 and is working fine.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks

I was working on October 28th on a 2 month old Dell Dimension 8400.  When I booted B.A.R.T. 2.0.100 it couldn't find the 'C' drive.  It turned out the 'C' drive was a S.A.T.A, but when I used the F6 to load the drivers off the 'A' drive floppy, although it showed the, I believe, correct driver and indeed loaded it, it still wouldn't recognize the 'C' dirve.

Later, I tried the same version of B.A.R.T. on my son's home built computer with a S.A.T.A. hard drive, the 'C' drive was recognized immediately, that is without loading any S.A.T.A. driver.

Any help?  This could be a problem as more and more S.A.T.A.s come on the market.

(Note: this is the same "article" that I posted in the "BART and Serial ATA Hard Drives" thread earlier.)

What kind of controller is that? I mean, is it integrated on your motherboard - or some kind of external (e.g. PCI) card, such as Promisse, Highpoint, ...

Can anybody, anybody help? I'm desperate!
Avast Bart looked so good on my friends comp. I bought my own. A lot of money and I can't get it to work because it wont recognise my hard drive. I haven't been able to get any direct response from support (ok, I know they're busy) and the program wont work .

ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Hello Eddy,

No, just a standard xp IDE controller for the hard drive.

Strange... it sounds like an ordinary controller to me.
When you rightclick the "Intel(r) 82801BA Bus Master IDE controller" item in Device Manager, select "Properties", switch to "Driver" page and click on "Driver Details" button - what files are listed below and what does the "Provider" and "File version" say for each of them?

Is there anything special about the partitioning of the drive? How many partititions do you have, what is their size and  filesystem?

I just tried on exactly the same system (at least the same controller and OS) and it works without any problems...  :-\
You said the same problem occurs on both your computers - are they the same? (hardware-wise, and their disk configuration / partitioning).

Do you use any other PowerQuest (or is it Symantec now?) tools - something that may set the partitions as "hidden", for example?

I wonder if the problem is in the access to the physical drive, or rather to the partitions... please, try to start DISKPART from the BART CD. It's a command-line tool for disk management. From its command prompt, run the commands
LIST DISK
LIST PARTITION
LIST VOLUME
and let us know their output.
(The program can be exitted using the EXIT command).

Thanks.

Hello Igor,
Thank you for your response.

My daughter's comp. is XP Home edition, sp1. It has Ide controller, one HD, just "C" drive.

No other PowerQuest tools have been used.

LIST DISK:   Status.    Size.        Free.      DYN.    GPT.

Disk0            Online     76gb       0b
Disk1            Online    149gb      0b

LIST VOLUME.

Volume     Ltr    Label        FS          Type     Size    Status

Vol 0          D    CD-ROM   CDFS     DVD-ROM  155mb
Vol1           E                                  CD-ROM       0b
Vol2                   NTFS     Partition                   76g  Healthy
Vol3                                Partition                  149g Healthy

LIST PARTITION.

It said, "There is no disk selected to list partitions. Select a disk and try again". I used Disk0 in all permutations but could not get it to show me any partitions. Perhaps I didn't do it right.

Is this any help?

Let me make sure: you booted from BART CD and it said that no local drive was detected; still from that BART CD session you started DISKPART and got these results?

The disk selection should probably be in the format
SELECT DISK 0
Anyway, it doesn't matter that much.
