Hello,Igor.

That is absolutely correct. Let me reiterate so that you are in no doubt.

I booted from BART CD and no drive was detected. Obviously, I am unable to use the various tools because of this. The AV program, which I desperately need, states, "Local hard drive is not detected" - and yes, I got all this, and am still getting it, whilst getting "THESE" results in DISKPART.

How are we looking?

Just a thought - from the DISKPART output I've noticed that there are no drive letters associated with the disk partitions... How come?

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.

We are looking puzzled  :-\
Obviously, there is no problem with the controller - the disk is accessible, even the NTFS partition is detected; it only doesn't have any letter associated (it is not "mapped").

OK, let's try to get some more info about the partition.
In DISKPART prompt, type the following, please:
SELECT VOLUME 2
DETAIL PARTITION

(and let us know the result)
Thanks!

Hello,

Select Volume 2
Detail Partition.

Partition 1:

Type:  44

Hidden:  Yes

Active:  Yes

Are we getting close?

Well, yes.
The partition is set to "hidden" - so there's no wonder BART cannot see it.
However, it's not a normal state - there should be some tool (in the original OS... or some kind of boot-manager) that hides the partition. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't expect Windows to boot from a hidden partition...

Do you use any boot-manager? (I can see another disk with an unknown partition type in the DISKPART listing)

Hello, Igor.

No, I do not use a boot manager.

I have two hard drives.

HD 1= 80g  my "C" and "D" drives.

HD 2=160g my "E" and "H" drives.

I partitioned these two hard drives with Partition Magic. Could PM have something to do with this problem?

Thank you.

Hello, Igor.

I've just checked Partition Magic. Drives "D" + "E" + "H" give me the possibility to "hide" these drives - so obviously they are in the "unhidden" state. Drive "C" does not give me this option, the "hide" button is greyed out. However, neither does it give me the option to "unhide" so I presume this is "unhidden" as well.

Any help?

Hard to say.
Partition Magic can certainly set a partition as hidden (or vice versa) - using the "Hide" or "Unhide" commands. However, I just don't think that Windows could boot from a hidden partition...
When you boot your operating system (i.e. not BART this time) and run DISKPART from there, with the same commands - do you get the same output?

There are other things that confuse me in the listing:
1. There are 2 disks, each with one big partition - which doesn't match what you described. It seems like Windows don't "understand" this partition - see only one big, instead of two real.
2. The partition has type 44. The "normal" value is 07; I searched the Internet and it seems that the partition type 44 is usually somehow connected to Roxio/Norton GoBack - do you (or did you) use such a thing?

Hello, Igor.

It seems to me that Windows is recognising my partitions and AVAST BART is not.

I ran DISKPART on my own system and here are the results:

LIST DISK:  Same.

LIST VOLUME:

Volume     Ltr    FS         TYPE              SIZE          INFO

Vol 0          F                 DVD-ROM           ob

Vol 1          G                 CD-ROM             0b

Vol 2          C    NTFS     Partition             16g       System

Vol 3          D    NTFS     Partition             60g

Vol 4          E    NTFS     Partition             75g

Vol 5          H    NTFS     Partition             74g

To be honest, I still have not been able to List Partition.

I have GoBack currently enabled.

Thank you.

Well, BART is build on Windows XP, actually - it's the same code. So, it should have the same capabilities as a standalone Window XP system.

However, GoBack replaces the standard boot-sector of the disk with its own - thus making the disk format "non-standard". Unless the computer really boots from the disk (so that the special GoBack code gets loaded and provides the disk access), the drive is inaccessible (or rather - the partition is in unkonwn format).
I really don't know if we can do anything about this...  :-\

Hello, Igor.

You are so right, I disabled GoBack and everything is working ok with AVAST BART.

I have standalone GoBack, v4. Being a newbie, you wont believe the number of minor scrapes this program has quickly got me out of. Is there really no way that I can use the both of them?

Thank you.

Perhaps contacting Roxio? It could be they have some sort of driver which you can load in cases like this.

Just a thought. ::)

Thank you Eddy,

I'll give Symantec (they bought out Roxio) a buzz and see if they can help'

Thank you, Igor.

I have never seen or used GoBack - but I believe it works similarly to a boot-manager; so, the necessary piece of code has to be loaded from the boot-sector (which doesn't happen when you don't boot from the drive).

The only other way (I can imagine) would really be a special filesystem driver that would make it possible to access this kind of partition; however, I am not really sure if such a driver exists (i.e. if anybody ever wrote it). And if yes, if they'd be willing to provide it to us (and additionally, if we could include it into BART somehow, even though I think the last part would be the easiest).

Right now, I really don't see how to use BART together with GoBack :(

Thank you, Igor

I will keep GoBack disabled because AVAST BART is such a great piece of software.

I was a little surprised that that there had not been an earlier query because GoBack is so common. Perhaps your usual AVAST BART customer has little need for GoBack - but I did find it very quick at putting things right.

Thank you for your great help.
