Same problem here.  First saw it after a re-start after installing Windows Defender's lastest definitions update "KB915597 (Definition 1.117.433.0)".   :-\

Plus -- I can't kill the process.

Wouldn't be the first time a Microsoft update has messed things up ...
FeAudrey if you have a problem caused by defender updating then that a different issue, Defender is useless anyway so if your on xp delet it and if your using vista-win7 then disable it and use Malwarebytes as your back up scanner.

OK, I fixed it, and it doesn't seem Windows Defender-related.

I went to Control Panel/Programs and Features, and selected Avast.  Then I selected "Change" (not "Repair"), and it downloaded a few items, including today's update, restarted, and now works fine.
