Dowload problems
« on: November 21, 2004, 05:45:10 PM »
I have just updated my avast 4 to avast 4.5 home edition. I had to delete the program because with avast 4.5 home edition i cannot download programs anymore by IExplore.

Does any body recognise this problem?

I am using Windows 2000

Avast does not block downloads in any way by default. Check the settings and check your firewall, adware blockers etc.

hddboer, please, what is your configuration?

1) sevicepack
2) firewall
3) any other interesting apps installed? (another antivirus, spam blocker, IDS)

I am having the exact same problem and I can verify that it is avast! that's preventing downloads.  Windows media player will not buffer and download managers such as Getright will not work either.  I've been working on this all weekend long thinking it was a firewall problem also but I've just disovered after about six restores and numerous installs/removals of various programs and even removing the IE index.dat and starting from scratch that it's the latest update to avast! that's causing this.  avast! has to be removed to download, even when disabled it still blocks downloads.

Windows XP Pro / Service Pack 2
IE 6.0.29
avast! version 4.5 Home Edition
     build 4.5.523/vps file version 0447-1

Is the problem solved if you install 4.5.529?

It won't update to 9, stays at 3 when I try.

I also want to add that I am spyware free which was my very first thought when this problem started.

My stepson's PC has the same updates and he's having no problems.  We're networked together on a hub with cable.  We're both using microsoft's firewall that came with service pack 2.  I've tried enabling/disabling but that doesn't solve the problem.  I can't figure out what I have on my computer that's not on his that's conflicting with avast!

I'm using default settings.

I've got to leave for work now and won't be able to give you any further details until late tonight/tomorrow.  TIA for the help.

I didn't know 4.5.529 was a beta and needed to be manually installed.  I updated and downloads still do not work  :(

I let a download window sit until it timed out and I got an "avast!: Connection timeout" window popped open with the following message:

Internet connection timeout elapsed. Continue waiting?
     [Server: '207.44.97.25', Port:100]

Thought maybe this might help with another suggestion to try.

port 100/tcp    [unauthorized use] (source)

What is making your system using port 100?
Are you using a proxy server?

I need glasses, it's port 110.  No proxy server.  I get this error when checking email.  7 messages available but avast won't let me receive them.

When I saw you say port 100 my eyes went ::)

Is the mail provider set to normal?
Anything in Avast's log file? (aswMaiSv.log)
What do you have under "[MailScanner]" in Avast4.ini?

hddboer,
anything new that you share with us?

What happens if you remove "mail.ptdprolog.net" from the line
DefaultPopServer=mail.ptdprolog.net

are you able to receive mail than?
If not restore the line ofcourse.
