I am going insane, please help me
« on: December 15, 2011, 08:03:52 PM »
Ok, I have 2 problems, I recently updated the program when it  told me there was an update. I am now running version 6.0.1367 on windows XP.
The first problem is, that I had since webrep was added to the program. No matter how many times I restart my computer, it asks me if I want to install webrep. Webrep is already installed, and works on my firefox. Just slightly annoying.

Now, my next problem. Is driving me absolutely insane. Since I updated to 6.0.1367, it has "show monthly security reports" The pop up for this has been showing up every 10-20 minutes, I went into avast settings, unchecked the box to show those reports, and then click "ok" 10-20 minutes later the pop up is there again. I go into the settings and the box is checked again.
I wanting more to fix the popup problem than the webrep, so anyone who can help me with this, its greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a corrupt installation.

Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

If that doesn't work, it will probably need a clean reinstall, I will give information to cross that bridge if the repair fails.

repair install did not work, the monthly report still pops up, and when I go into settings to turn that off, it turns itself back on. I have quite a bit of computer knowledge, So I am going to uninstall and do a clean install, hope that this works, Will report back if it did or not. Thanks again for the help.

You're welcome.

Hopefully with the other suggestions you are on your way to a clean install after having completely removed the problematic installation.

The clean install worked perfectly. Now I am able to turn off the popup for the monthly report, and the webrep does not pop up every time I restart my computer. Thanks VERY much for the help.

Sounds a bit like your avast! service wasn't running... didn't the UI show that you're unprotected?
The monthly report should show only once in a month, and the setting (to turn it off) should definitely be preserved. If the service wasn't running, that might explain the symptoms.

Shouldn't the repair and reboot have fixed that though ?

I don't know about this particular case, but...

Many users perform the repair, but they try to test the results before rebooting, so thet get to the (usually wrong) conclusion that the repair didn't work.

The *reboot* action after the repair should need to be more stressed out, and in some circumstances a second reboot is needed, together with waiting several minutes before effectively testing the results.
