@Para-Noid :- If you do not have any resolution to fix the problem then don't criticize or misguide groups who are trying to assist others.
Take a look at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=90627.msg720791#msg720791
Pondus, who has a lot more experience than most people, was doing just that before iyogi jumped in.  ;D
If you follow the forums you will find that iyogi usually leaps before looking. iyogi has this never ending desire to "not" making things better. Only worse. I am "not" criticizing anyone. iyogi is doing enough misguiding for all of us.  :)

@ the OP

I sent a message to essexboy. He will probably give you the more help than me.
But, do provide the info I requested. It might be tomorrow as it's late in the UK.
Please have patience. We will figure it out.  :)

@megapancake,

I'm not going to get into who knows what or if other suggestions were correct or not.

What I can do is read your topic. You have mentioned other antiviruses being installed, whether currently or before. If I'm not mistaken, you mentioned having used AVG in the past and also MSE.

If you haven't yet, you should uninstall both before installing avast. After the uninstall, and sill before installing avast, you should run the respective removal utilities for each of those (and for any other you ever had) so to remove any potential conflicts.

A partial list of specific removal utilities for security tools is located at http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/. Review the list, read the appropriate info, download the respective removal utilities and follow the appropriate instructions. After each removal, please reboot before running additional utilities.

All this may or may not solve your original problem completely. Your system may have additional issues. But in any case, it is very recommended to remove any remnants of security tools before installing new ones.

Please report back when you are done (or if you have additional questions).

I have come across this side by side thing before - somewhere in the forums ...  But I can't find it at the moment..  I will continue searching

It is a software problem, as far as I can remember and was related to win2k

I'll say it again (and you should re-read the relevant post): uninstall is not enough; uninstall is not the same as the removal utility.

You need to uninstall, reboot, removal utility, reboot.

BTW, Win2k is Windows 2000 (a version of Windows), which needs also SP4 + RU1 for avast to work. If your version of Windows is not Windows 2000, then part of those links are not relevant.

Have you read the links posted by AdrianH? You need to install the package mentioned there. Generally, avast's installation would also install it for you if it is missing in your system. For some reason, it didn't happen.

About MSE and AVG (or whatever other antivirus), you shouldn't use 2 resident antivirus tools simultaneously, as they conflict between each other. That's why, to solve conflicts, you need to uninstall the others, and remove their remnants.

About Vista, do you have SP1 and SP2 installed? Check it at Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> System. Also check there that you have Windows already validated / activated. Any other Windows Updates available for your system? Check for them and apply them (and then reboot and re-check for more).

About new games, first you should have your antivirus installed and working. That's the main topic here. If you have avast installed and working, then we can move on to solve some connection problem, or firewall rules, or whatever else. Or maybe we have some misunderstanding here?

Download avast when you're running MSE. Go offline. Uninstall MSE. Install avast offline. Boot. Go online again.
