127.0.0.1 smtp server name?
« on: November 23, 2004, 05:20:40 AM »
Hi,

i hope this is the right place to get help for this.

i use netscape 7.1 and thunderbird 0.8 as my email programs.  recently sbc yahoo changed the server names that i have to use and when trying to put it in, ie. smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com, it sticks for about ten minutes and then reverts back to 127.0.0.1

nothing i seem to do gets it to stay.  i've run adaware, spybot, housecall, hoster, spyware blaster, winpatrol, etc and i can't get this to stay.

interesting enough, the 127.0.0.1 server name is ok for my pop setting.  i get mail just fine just can't send it.

i've checked the setting in avast for smtp and it is correct(smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com)

any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Eddy,

i hadn't read it before, sorry.  but i have now.

i'm running ME.

i'm also very much a non techie so i apolgize if i'm a little slow on the uptake, but it seemed like the fixes there were geared toward xp.  am i right?

i have manually set my tbird and netscape settings as if not running avast and about ten to twenty minutes later they have been reset to the 127.0.0.1 setting.  this seems ok for receiving mail but for sending it's a big no go and i have to manually set the smtp server name each time to send emails.

i hope this is enough info.  if more needed please let me know.  i've been working on this for four days now and at least i'm feeling a little less like hurling my computer into the street ;Dcause it looks like this is finally the right place to get help :)

thanks again for the help

ken

I'm running ME.

I think the best is run Mail Protection Wizard and disable avast from scanning emails.
(Start > All Programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard)

But, why are you doing this? emails are the most common source of virus nowadays.  ::)

i'd really rather not turn it off.  for just that reason.  have i reached an end though?  i did turn off the scan of outbound mail, but it didn't help.

it sounds like i'm stuck changing manually the smtp server name every time?

thanks again for the help

The new version of avast no longer needs the 127.0.0.1 redirection for scanning Pop3 e-mail accounts.
For most accounts this was done as part of the upgrade. However, for those of us who did manual changes to the settings, the change over did not occur automatically.
Please reset your e-mail settings as though avast was not on your computer.(Reset them to the settings requested by your ISP)

Bob, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought with WinMe as for Win98SE that I use, that you still have to use the 127.0.0.1. The new Avast does not need it if you are using Win2000, XP, or NT.

Correct, Avast mail scanner is working transparantly on NT based systems, not on 9x/me.

I have an idea, but I can't promise it will work.
- Create a backup of Avast4.ini
- Than change the mail section part in avast4.ini so that these settings are there:
[MailScanner]
Log=20
DefaultPopServer=
DefaultSmtpServer=
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=0
PopListen=
SmtpListen=
ImapListen=

- Setup the mail as if Avast isn't there.
- Check if the mail is working
- Run the mail protection wizzard (close the email client first ofcourse)
- Check the mail again.

Does this solves the problem?
If not, put back the copy of Avast4.ini

The line Log=20 enables extended logging of what is going on and may tell us more if the mail scanning still isn't working.
