RPC error

I am unable to "start" my Avast on access protection. I keep getting the message "AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error".

The scenario was, I suddenly lost my internet connection and recieved a reboot notice from my ISP troubleshooter. After I rebooted, I noticed the Avast icon did not restart. I ran a system virus scan which turned up nothing, and there was nothing in the virus logs.

I installed the MS blaster worm patches approximately 3 weeks ago, and I'm running a firewall. I'm running Windows XP home edition. Did I get the bug, or do I have another issue?
