Update Error 80
« on: November 24, 2004, 06:49:42 PM »
I read through the thread where the person couldn't get updates automatically or manually - my problem is only with automatic updates.  I've manually downloaded the latest update but cannot get them automatically.  It's always the same: Error 80, cannot contact cat.asw.cz, (or one of the avast servers).  I'm running XP SP2, use their firewall, have tried disabling the firewall with the same results - unable to communicate with server.  From a MS DOS prompt, I pinged avast1.-3 servers and couldn't get anything back.  I'm using build 4.5.518.  I'm registered, been using this awesome software for over a year, but just about 2 weeks ago started having this automoatic update problem.  I have both update settings on "Automatic" and am connected via DSL.  Also using the "My computer is permanently connected to the internet" option.   HELP!   :-\

Can't you try the build 4.5.531? See here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=9007

Maybe your firewall troubles were corrected...  ;)

Thanks for the quick reply but, I tried installing that update and continue to get errors in connecting to the internet to complete the installation.
Here's the log - maybe it'll help?

Have been having same problems as alienjoe211 with automatic updates for similar time period.
Have downloaded the link posted above with firewall and without, successfully but still getting error on automatic updates
"cannot connect to cat.asw.cz (unknown:80)."
Downloaded this link last night, error message after was
"cannot connect to cat.asw.cz (195.47.75.50:80).
Am also on XP SP2, home edition version 2002.
Have been using avast for a year now with no other problems.
I am a novice so please be gentle with me.

I reported this thread to the avast team...
I can't figure out what is happening but I'm sure they can.

My system Date/Time are all correct but just can't update automatically and only manually as mentioned in my other post be it with or without Microsoft's built-in Firewall in Windows XP SP2.

Alienjoes log simply means he can't connect to the site. There's no other explanation needed. If he can contact http://cat.asw.cz from the browser, there must be the investigation done, who does stop the traffic to the avast.setup (usually wrongly set-up firewall).

If he cannot contact cat at all, there must be something deeply rotten in his system, but beyond the point of the installer itself.

Microsoft's built-in Firewall in Windows XP SP2.

It should not be a problem as the internal firewall just block inbound attacks and not the outbound traffic.
Can't you open the browse and open the site?

Still getting same error message with automatic updates.
Time and date ok.
Can contact http://cat.asw.cz from browser.
Using dial up connection option on avast settings.
Can download manually.
Haven't changed any settings on anything.
Have been following other thread regarding not being able to update manually or automatically, are these connected?
Help.

Can you check the proxy settings?
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy

Try the 'non-automatic' settings, i.e., no proxies at all.

After reading all of the posts - here's the latest.....

I can go to the site to manually get updates - I mentioned that earlier and of course, I'm on your site now posting, so there isn't a problem with internet access.

The problem is with the XP firewall - even though Avast is listed in the exceptions, it still isn't letting the updater do it's job.

I recently installed another software program and had a similar problem - where the program was listed in the exceptions list, but still couldn't get updates - even after disabling the XP firewall!  So I re-activated my Zone Alarm firewall and tried to get both problems resolved.....

It worked!  Zone Labs has been my firewall for over a year and is now back on my Approved list!  No sense in trying to fix what ain't broke!

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Joe
