Can't re-register Avast (and other major issues)
« on: January 04, 2012, 12:59:53 AM »
 ??? :P :'(

Hello:

The Avast Summary page tells me that my system is UNSECURED.
When I click on the "Fix Now" button a dialogue box opens
and tells me:

"The following components could not be started: Mail Shield,
IM Shield, P2P Shield, File System Shield, Web Shield, Script Shield,
Behavior Shield, Network Shield"

The summary page ALSO tells me that the Real Time shields are off
(and offers an "Turn on" link), that my Virus Definitions version
is 111231-1 (and offers an "update" link), and that my expiration
date is: 1/1//2012 (with "show details" link).

When I press on the "Turn on" link, I get the same message from when
I click on the "Fix Now" button.

When I press on the "update" link, Avast tells me that "the license
for this product is invalid or has expired." Same thing happens when I
click on the "update now" button just below, on the same page.

I have tried to re-register the license. When I go, or am sent to the
Registration page, I click on the "Register Now" button and a dialog box
says "retrieving information please wait..." but after maybe ten seconds
it disappears and nothing happens (I waited for 12 minutes).

 :'(

I am using Windows Vista and on the lower right-hand icon bar there is
a "Windows Security Alerts" icon. When I open it, Window Security Center
opens to a window with the title "Security Essentials." The "Malware
Protection" bar is set to the color red and it tells me that "avast!
Antivirus reports that it is turned off" and it there is "Turn on now"
button right next to it.

I click on that, which prompts me to "run a program that did not come with
Windows," I click on the "Yes, I trust this program and am ready to run it."
The window disappears but nothing follows.

Nothing happens and I am back to square one.

I went to the Control Panel to try a simple repair of avast! But after
clicking on "repair" and getting the "Installation Progress" dialogue box,
almost immediately another box pops up which says: "Error processing packages.
Please use full update." What does that mean?

Maybe what I need to do is uninstall avast! and re-installing it later.

did you uninstall any previous used or preinstalled AV before installing avast ?

it is also recomended to use the vendors removal tool to clear any leftovers

run and reboot - Uninstallers – Security Software

Have you tried avast repair and reboot ?

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

or try reinstall - remove with this reboot / install again reboot
Uninstall Utility - http://www.avast.com/en-no/uninstall-utility
