No internet connection after registration

I've received the pop up telling me telling me that I need to re-register my free version of Avast.  I do this without a problem since then Google Chrome won't connect to the internet, the page times out.  I am connected as Firefox displays pages but it's slow and sluggish and pretty much unusable.  I had to restore my PC to previous settings to undo the registration.  My internet worked perfectly again afterwards.

I tried registration again just to make sure it was Avast that caused the problem but the same thing happened (I had to restore my PC to make my internet work again).

Avast is still asking me to register but obviously I don't want to.  Is this a known error and is there something I can do?

What version of avast are you trying to re register ? if coming from a very early version of avast a clean install might be benificial, download latest version of avast http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and the removal tool http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe and save - uninstall avast from remove programs or programs and features then reboot into safe mode and run the removal tool for all versions of avast used in the past with reboots inbetween.

Reboot into normal mode when finished and install your newly saved avast version, register and reboot.

For the Free edition of avast 6.x, you can alternatively use http://www.avast.com/license-center.

Then insert the registration code in avast main GUI -> maintenance -> registration.
