Right click scan not working
« on: January 10, 2012, 08:06:05 AM »
Hi, I would like to right click on files on my desktop, and in my flash drive, and scan them using the Scan "name of file here" option.  However, nothing happens when I do this. The Avast icon does not animate, even though I have that selected in the settings, and there are no scan results shown, even though I have "Show scan results" selected in settings as well.  I can open Avast and select files to be scanned that way, but not through the right click method.  Also when I open Avast and use the "Select folder to scan" option to scan my flash drive, it does not see the files that I want to scan.  Please help, I need to access some files from my flash drive before tomorrow, but I want to scan them first.  I'm using Windows 7 professional 64 bit....

Thanks

Avast! will scan them anyway.

But if you really want to do it manually for peace of mind, plus since this should work no matter how potentially pointless it is, you should start first by repairing your Avast!.  Do that by opening Control Panel/Programs and Features, then proceed as though you are going to uninstall Avast!, but choose the Repair option.

I'll give it a shot, but I just installed it about an hour ago, do you think I still need to repair it?

Have you rebooted the system since the install ?

+1, yes, reboot if you have not yet, first and foremost.

This would also beggar the question of what your previous AV was.  AVs are hard to remove, and their remnants can cause conflicts like this.

Whatever it was, you should be able to find the uninstaller made for it on this list>>http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/, grab the right one, then do the Avast! repair if it is still needed after.

Glad the simplest thing worked, a problem I never run into as I have rebooting drilled into my head as mandatory caution after any install, whether a program prompts me to or not. ;D

A simple rule to remember:
Any program that adds or makes changes to the registry
Requires a reboot of the system if you expect all of it's features to work properly.
