Real Time Shields tab not working
« on: February 01, 2012, 11:59:59 PM »
Running Avast Free 6.0.1367 (all patches applied) on Vista Home Basic SP2 (all patches applied).  If I click on the Real-Time Shields tab nothing happens.  All other tabs are fine.  Tried a repair and get error: "Error processing packages. 0x20000011.  Run Full update."  Any ideas as to what is the cause of this problem?

Download avast free again. Install it over your current installation and reboot. Let it update after the reboot. Wait 10 minutes to test again.

If the GUI problem persists, then temporarily change the resolution to 1024x768 (x32bits colors). Then change it back to your usual screen resolution and check avast GUI again.

Please report back.

I find more often than not, Vista is extremely over loaded, and unless stripped down, almost never really works that well.  I assume since your using avast! FREE, that this is just a personal computer at home?  J.R.

Reloaded Avast Free, rebooted, waited for the updates, rebooted, Real-Time Shields now working.  Thanks for the help.  Any idea why this happened?

Here are just some issues proven to cause hard disk corruption:

1)Bugs in O.S. (Vista is the worst, and needs to be stripped, reply and I'll share Vista strip)
2)Solar Flares
3)Static Electricity (usually chair mats)
4)power Surge and Sag
5)failing hardware
6)left overs from previous security applications (I wrote an article on this too)
7)Windows just decomposes with age anyways
8)Victum of the billionth bit (acceptible HD error rate)
9)decomposing magnetic media in the hard disk (creates bad sectors when it's bad enough)
10)add / removing programs
11)registry cleaners
12)infections

As mentioned the OS is Vista Home Basic SP2. But didn't mention it is the 32 bit version.
Other security related software are current/up-to-date free versions of MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware and MS Firewall.  I know that the shields tab worked about a month ago as I was looking for something.

Glad you solved it. You asked why this happened? Well, A glitch? Some bad shut down of the system? HDD corruption? Other possibilities? Who knows. If this doesn't happen again (specially if it doesn't come back in a certain frequency), then I'd consider it a simple glitch.

About your OS, you are fine. There is no reason at all to touch it, specially if it is working correctly as you reported.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but other than this minor glitch my PC has been running just fine.  No plans to make any changes. Before making my post I did do a forum search and did see several other posts with similar problems but none of them seem to have been resolved or at least not reported as resolved.   Thanks again for your help.

I have seen cases where Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware would cause undesirable symtoms.  These are the 2 BEST antispyware products out there!  So, we would always use the SuperAntiSpyware Portable version to prevent any conflict. You can also turn off that Windows Defender worthless spyware app!  J.R.

These two sentences seem to conflict with one another.  The first says there are problems with these two products.  Then your second sentence praises them as the best out there.  Care to elaborate on this topic?

You are right, let me clarify.  I have seen cases when both Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware were installed on the same machine, that the machine did not act right.  There was some sort of conflict between the 2 applications. To prevent this from occuring, we decided on the approach of only installing Malwarebytes on the system, and just use the SuperAntiSpyware portable version (it does not install).  This solved those issues I have experienced personally.  J.R.

Being that my PC is a home computer and only for personal use I use the free versions of Avast, MalwareBytes, and SuperAntispyware. Avast is always resident and running, the other two are only run independent of one another and on demand and I have not had any conflict problems.
