I had to rerun the disabler again as admin. Now I dont get the error at startup.... my bad, I do get an error ;-)
Scripting is disabled (checked again with noscript.exe) but wscript.exe is being launched still (see screenshot).
The error is different now.

(I'll continue tomorrow, it's almost midnight here)
Thanks for all your help!!

Trying to find out who was launching wscript, I searched in the registry for "data.js". I found 3 instances. See attached screenshot (yes it's gif, a quick way of shrinking its size ;-)).
I don't know if the entries can be safely removed or they did something interesting before.

Thanks!

Could you export those three keys please as I would like to look at the full data set

Especially as they are not showing in the run keys or the task keys

Change the reg extension to txt and that attach

Here is one of the exports.
The other two export the whole windows branch, and are 5MB each. I copy the beginning here. If you think the rest is useful I could try to upload it somewhere or send it to you somehow zipped.

First instance:
------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows]
"TaskMngr"="wscript \"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Common Files\\ComObjects\\data.js\""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Action Center]
"ReNotifyCount"=dword:00000002

Third instance:
------------------

OK that is totally sneaky - I will have to add those to OTL for a search from now on.  A different area to look

First export all three keys to your desktop for safety

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or better installed please disable it for the duration of this run

Run OTL
 • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
Code: [Select]
:Reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"TaskMngr"=-
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2896772526-1491305543-3170966515-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows]
"TaskMngr"=-
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2896772526-1491305543-3170966515-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows]
"TaskMngr"=-

:Files
ipconfig /flushdns /c

:Commands
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]
[Reboot]
[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
Thanks for all your help!
One quick question though,

shouldn't one of the keys be:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows]
"TaskMngr"=-

?

Done.
I have not seen the wscript process now.
Do you think all is fixed now?

The last OTL output is attached.

Thank you very much for your help!

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean  :thumbsup:

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
 • Click Start.
 • Open My Computer.
 • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
 • Select the View Tab.
 • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
 • Click Yes to confirm.
 • Click OK.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

 Upgrading Java:
 • Go to this site  and click Do I have Java
 • It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version
SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

 • Go to Control Panel and select System
 • Select System
 • On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
 • Select System Protection Tab
 • Select Create at the bottom
 • Type in a name i.e. Clean
 • Select Create
Now we can purge the infected ones
 • GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
 • Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
 • Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
 • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
 • Select the More Options tab
 • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
 • Select Delete on the pop up
 • Select OK
 • Select Delete
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.  Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ?

Keep safe  :wave:

I have a very similar problem (update.exe being spawned by wscript). It's infected all three of my computers. I normally use AVG and it hasn't detected anything. An interesting twist is because one of the computers has a bad CPU, update.exe crashes and a window with the title "AMozilla crash reporter" pops up saying "Firefox had a problem and crashed... Tell AMozilla about this crash so they can fix it" with buttons "Restart AFirefox" and "Quit AFirefox"
