avast licence expired - but it hasn't
« on: February 06, 2013, 11:42:31 AM »
Last night my PC (running XP) froze up and I shut it down.  On a cold boot this morning I find that avast is not running and that my licence appears to have expired - but there is still about 7 weeks left of the 2 year licence period.  I've tried 'Fix Now' and 'Start Program' from the current status screen with no luck. Understandable if it thinks the licence has expired. I've tried inserting the licence file from the subscription file but that fails due to an RPC error.  Any help would really be appreciated.  Thanks!

Try repair and reboot
Control panel / ad remove / avast / uninstall / repair option....wait a minute and reboot

I suggest to download the latest full update package from here and apply it. The "Fix" button should work then.

After yesterday's problems I ran Ad Aware and Malwarebytes which found 4 'things' they didn't like, cleared them out, rebooted, and Avast is now back running again.  The number of days left on my subscription is correct.  I don't think that my Avast could have updated overnight (could it?, because it appeared to be out of subscription at that point) so it looks like there may have been a problem as described.

You may be having a conflict going on. Ad-Aware has a resident anti-virus engine and "will" create/cause a conflict  with avast. One result is the possibility of false positives. I would strongly urge you to uninstall Ad-Aware asap. And Ad-Aware isn't really that good. Just stick with avast and MBAM.

and what do you base that on?

you mean avast have low detection also then!
as they use ther own engine + Gdata.....meaning Bitdefender - avast engine
the free only have two engines there own + vipre

Lavasoft Ad-Aware – Combines an in-house anti-spyware engine with Vipre's engine. Ad-Aware Total Security replaces Vipre with G-Data's multiple engines.

old rumors die hard.....from the time before they started with multi engines
