All of the Shields are under the control of avastSvc.exe, so I rather doubt your assumption on the more shields the slower it would be.

After installing the new Avast 7 I noticed not only the system startup is slower, but all the programs launched are loaded slower A LOT. This is a serious problem for me and I hope Avast 7 will be updated soon to solve this thing.

There is another pre-release beta version in testing right now, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=94790.0 for more information on what it covers.

I decided to install the Avast 7 beta version to get rid of slow system startup problem, but this issue still remains.
If  I remove Avast, the startup time is about 18 seconds; with avast , 180 seconds .
That is not acceptable to me.

My configuration : Avast 7.0.1414 (default settings) + Comodo Firewall
My hardware: i7 2630QM + 8 GB RAm - Windows 7 64 bit

For sure, a bad interaction between avast and the firewall.
Maybe you could add mutual exclusions. Maybe the network drivers and the firewall drivers are being load and block the avast ones...
Sorry for not being much help than just guessing...

On startup, I noticed that Avast made several attempts to connect to internet, probably to update itself or its definition files.
I use a Dial-up connection; probably Avast stops loadind itself, waiting for response form Avast server.
I also ticked 'Dial-up' modem in 'update setting', but it doesn't work.
I never considered to disable 'automatic updates', because Avast starts complaining about the system is not fully protected.
 :(

I had a problem just like yours on Windows 7 64 bit.

The solution turned out to be simple.

This thread isn't very long and may help.

Thanks for the reply, ArghMatey;
 but my notebook came preinstalled with Windows 7 and no trace of MSE.
So I think MSE it's not the problem here.

I can confirm that Avast 7 severely slows down windows 7 64-bit. I clean installed windows 7 64-bit on my fiancee's Alienware m14x and installed Avast 7 Free after all windows updates were installed, along with Comodo Firewall Free. I noticed start-up took almost 2 minutes to fully load. Before this fresh install, with Avast 6 on the same notebook prior, start-up would take approximately 30 seconds.

So I downloaded Soluto, AFTER JUST EYEBALLING THE 2 MINUTE START-UP WITH AVAST 7 AFTER A FEW MORE RESTARTS, and confirmed Avast 7 was the culprit taking 88 seconds to load. So I disabled Comodo Firewall thinking this might be affect Avast 7 and restarted 3 times, and Soluto still showed about 80 seconds for Avast 7 to load. Consequently, I uninstalled Comodo Firewall thinking this might solve the problem and restarted the laptop 3 more times and can verify Avast took roughly 80 seconds each time for windows to fully start-up.

I also tried the Avast 7 beta 3, to no avail. The long start-up time still exists.

It's clear that there is a problem with Avast 7, and seems ifAvast has dropped the ball on there latest version and Windows 7 64-bit.

Do you use a dial-up connection like mine ?
I think Avast, on startup, waits for response from Avast server, even if I'm not connected;
as I can log many attempts to connect to 'vl.ff.avast.com'.

I've had the same problem with  AIS 7. I'm running Windows 7 Pro, 64bit, SP1. I’ve followed some of the procedures recommended in this thread but none have solved the problem. Note that this problem does not occur on any of my 32 bit machines.

BTW until there is a solution to this problem I have gone back to AIS 6.

I have same problem with Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1426 on Win7 64bit. My notebook now boots up 3 minutes (sometimes 4 and more). Today, I will uninstall Avast and try if it will be better - I think it will. I talked with many IT specialists and each said that Avast 7 on Win7 64bit is very bad  >:(
