The v6 removal tool worked well for me. After using it I also removed the
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast folder.
Fairly simple.
Beta testing is still only meant for those prepared to recover from unexpected problems.

Are there any beta testers in the "no cloud or other reporting of what's on my machine, no browser plugins, no remote connection features, etc" camp and exploring the beta's configuration/operation while sniffing the network for inappropriate Avast traffic?  If so... is it looking as though Avast 7 can be used without the objectionable components and features?
Maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me that disabling the new cloud features in V7 would leave you essentially with what v6 is now. To me there is no such thing as "inappropriate Avast traffic".

Entering a beta trial isn't something to do lightly and much more so on a non-test machine. It is all about acceptance of a limited risk and how that may impact on your system. No one is going to be able to say exactly how it might react on your system as there are so many different system permutations.

You might have no problems at all, but there can be no guarantees on beta testing other than bugs can and at times occur on beta testing, most be moderate some less so. So it is important that you know and accept this (or wait) and most importantly have a robust backup and recovery strategy. Hard disk imaging software is such a strategy to make it easy to set your system back to what it was before the beta should you experience a problem you can't live with.

As far as I remember DavidR wrote on this thread that he had to search and remove leftover of V7 manually in order to do a clean install.

Not entirely correct as I was able to run aswclear.exe for avast 6 (ran it twice for good measure) and that cleared out enough to be able to do a clean install of the beta. That however, was for the early closed beta trial where many bugs were squashed before the release of the public beta. Though the usual beta trial warning must apply.

Given the earlier commentary about some definitions/detections being moved to the cloud, I'm wondering if you'd even have v6 level protection.  I can't tell what is becoming cloud locked and what isn't.

I can't understand why all this "chit chat" in this main beta topic (which I hope it will be moved to the beta section some time in the very near future).

About the cloud, nothing is "moved" nor "dependent" on "it". Moreover, an off line system can still have the same protection than everyone else (and in fact, the final resulting protection is even better). No personal (nor commercial) information is collected or sent anywhere, specially when you can disable each and all these features. More questions not related to evaluating and reporting the beta? No problem, open a new topic. Thanks for help us (users testing the beta) to keep this topic cleaner to follow it.

One beta tester asking others in the same category isn't chit chat and certainly pertains to this topic. ???

Downloaded version 7 and began installing over 6x at the end of the installation received a error message stating "configuration error" at which point the installer disappeared. Version 6 was still installed. At that point updates for definitions would not update, nor would the program update. Tried to repair no good, at the point uninstalled version 6 and reinstall. Everything back to normal.
Conclusion: Version 7 would not install over 6
Running Windows 7 64 bit :'(

Congratulations to avast! team for the recent beta version of avast! Free Antivirus 7.0.1396.  The layout is much better and more attractive, in particular, the addition of Cloud Services.

However, the latter seems to be not securely established and is easily disconnected.  On several occasions, I have tried to disable/enable Streaming Updates (settings) after/before starting up my home PC equipped with Windows 7 Service Pack 1.

Perhaps, avast! team would look into the matter and remedy the adverse situation as soon as possible.

Regards,
A. Chung

I get the same here, most of the time the cloud service is usually disconnected but as this is part of the beta program then there are to be expected problem's and the fault would more than likely resolve in the server side of things so i think avast would be working on this issue already i expect and hopefully it's resolved before the release of the stable.

The same thing happens now and again with Webrep to come to think of it but has been much better lately compaired to the previous months.

I would think that 1 or 2 RCS would be in order  before the final version is available.

Mail Shield no idea why, it started this morning, the mail shield prevents Thunderbird from connecting (Gmail and iCloud, both IMAP). Turning off the mail shield and setting back the accounts to ssl solves the issue, well sort of ;)
