*** Firefox causes Threat detected alert ***
« on: February 08, 2012, 07:43:20 PM »
Just lost 30 minutes of typing because one of the OTL logs was too big. Grr.

Sorry. Basically I am getting a Threat Detected from Avast whenever I load Firefox. Ran Malware bytes. Deleted Malware.Trace and PUM.Bad.Proxy. Next ran OTL. OTL.txt is 184kb. Extras.txt is 76kb.

I can type out the exact reference from Avast if that would help. It is described as a URL:Mal. The Process is firefox.exe.

What's my next step? Thanks very much to everyone in advance! fritz

You would be needing to attach those logs (MBAM/OTL) for review.

If the OTL logs are too large, break them in 2, then make 2 separate posts.

your malwarebytes log say you are running MBAM version 1.28...and database 1134....this must be years old  ?   ::)

it should be version 1.60 and database 2012.02.08.06.....and you only have to run a quick scan

or are you posting an old log ?....as the scan date indicate 2008!

I should imagine that you will get the same problem with IE - Let me know if the problem persists after reboot

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or better installed please disable it for the duration of this run

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    Quote
    :OTL
O2 - BHO: (AVG Safe Search) - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - Reg Error: Value error. File not found
    O3 - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (no name) - {4A1C6093-14F9-44D7-860E-5D265CFCA9D9} - No CLSID value found.

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Affirmative with IE as well.

Affirmative with both IE & FF after re-boot.

Will re-run OTL after supper.

Thank you, all of you.

I will need to recheck the Host file as that is where the problem was - If OTL failed to reset it I will use another tool

OK, first attempt hung the computer. Even Ctrl-Alt-Del wouldn't work - had to use the reset button.

Trying again...

Yes, same outcome. Computer locked up tighter than a drum.

Still getting the "Threat detected." warning also.

Can we try something else?

Thanks, Buzz (fritz)

OK, back, finally.

DL'd the msi file from MS. Ran it and I think we're good! Amazing, thank you so much!

As a way of saying thanks, I am offering my services to anyone who is thinking of buying an acoustic guitar. For free, I will assess your interests with regard to playing style, budget and other preferences and make several recommendations regarding make & model of guitar. This offer has no time limit.

Disclaimer: I do not work for a guitar maker or in a music store. I do have a comprehensive knowledge of what's out there and I'm fairly sure I can steer you toward the guitar of your dreams. OT, I know - thanks again. Buzz (fritz)
