privacy question re forum.avast.com
« on: February 16, 2012, 04:26:29 PM »
You always know it is me when I arrive here - even if I have cleared my cache & cookies, got a new IP, and removed telltale breadcrumbs from my system with CCleaner. When I return here, I'm already logged in if I use this same computer and browser (Firefox). How do you know it is still me?

Thanks.
BARE BONES installation of free avast! 2014.9.0.2021 with File System Shield (only). All "extras" are not installed or disabled. It wanted server status which I blocked via ZA. I also killed AvastEmUpdate.exe by renaming it in Safe Mode. Windows XP Home SP3, ZoneAlarm 6.1.744.001, Firefox & IE8, Outlook Express, Thunderbird.

Are you sure that you have cleared cookies, if you have accepted a sites cookies, depending on browser and settings those may not be cleared.

As cookies don't require an IP address, otherwise you would have to log back on again every time.

There is such a thing as being too cautious/paranoid, they aren't all out to get you.

He should be cautious/paranoid if he still has IE6 on his system.

You're right. It was a cookie. There were 3 - avast.com, www.avast.com, and forum.avast.com. I only removed the first two and forgot about the last one. I was flabbergasted for awhile because my post in a different forum was flagged for moderator approval, which never happened before. The paranoia is subsiding...  :)

OT/PS: I keep IE6 partly because MS is trying to kill it. Also I like its customizability better than subsequent IE versions. I use it mostly for local tests although it still works at most internet sites. I use Firefox 99% of the time on the big bad internet.

MS is trying to kill IE6 and you need to read this about Windows Explorer as IE is the basis of Windows.

Quote
Windows Explorer is a file manager application that is included with releases of the Microsoft Windows operating system from Windows 95 onwards. It provides a graphical user interface for accessing the file systems. It is also the component of the operating system that presents many user interface items on the monitor such as the taskbar and desktop. Controlling the computer is possible without Windows Explorer running (for example, the File | Run command in Task Manager on NT-derived versions of Windows will function without it, as will commands typed in a command prompt window). Located in the C:\Windows directory, it is sometimes referred to as the Windows Shell, explorer.exe, or simply “Explorer”.

IE (Internet Explorer)= iexplore.exe  Version 6 is outdated and this is what MS want's to get rid off.

WE (Windows Explorer)= explorer.exe This certainly has nothing to do with the security flaws of IE6.

In a way it has as Windows Explorer uses IE to display the folder layout, help screens, etc. and other elements in the OS.

However, as much as MS would love to kill IE6 it was a part of XP, so is still going to be supported (in whatever SP the latest is) until XP extended support ends in 2014.
