I haven't seen the problem simulated so far - avast! works OK on my Win2k (virtual) machine.
I included one small change for the next version that might help - but it's hard to say for sure when I can't really test it. Even if what I've guessed from NON's dump is the common problem of this thread, it could manifest somewhere else if avoided on the one place I changed.

Many thanks for this information, igor! ;)

Then I / we can hope, that the next update will help us!

There must be a reason, why the tray-icon of avast didn't appear and I can't open avastUI.exe.
Version 6 works very well in these points.

It's curious, that avast! said after the update, that the update went well and it shows V.7 as installed in the UI from Version 6 (before the restart) and under "Software" on my PC.
But after the restart of the PC nothing happens. That means, V.7 doesn't work.

What do you think, when we will have the new update?

Just for information and feedback:
Today I installed one of my Windows 2000-PC's with the free V7.0.1426 from scratch - without problems!
The system is running fine and stable.
~SKY~ can find more details in the german forum section.

Also I forgot to mention here that in this version, Avast 7 also has resource issues from the CPU that can pose a bit of a problem, when rendering pages on IE6, noted it might freeze the OS up to 1 second, something that the NTOSKRNL.exe process may trigger a Stop Error if the resources go down even more that Avast takes, it is apparently this version does work, but resource issues are the main problem why Avast 7 may not be fully compatable for Windows 2000 SP4.

Hello @ all,

my problem is, avast! v7 free doesn´t work on W2k SP4

- NOT after an Update over the UI
- NOT after a clean install.

In both cases, i didn´t get an error and there is no .mdmp file at C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\log\
In both cases, avast! said at the end of installation, that the installation was succesfully.

In both cases and after Restart the Notebook:
- There's no avast!-Icon in the taskbar next to the clock
- I can't open the programm over the Desktop-Icon. Nothing happens when using AvastUI.exe!!!
- There´s no avast! process runing at the taskmanager

I had no other choice but to initiate a fallback to Version 6

I do have absolutely the same problem as Cold has !
It's so frustrating.

Where can I find the older Avast versions (5, 6 ) ???

Regs,

http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/11113/

Do not run " Download This Version " for some reason it gives you V.7. Use FileHippo Mirror a little bit lower.

Bad news:

Yesterday evening:
De-installed Avast 7 / downloaded Avast 6 /
double-clicked on the *.exe for installation, and:
Installation procedure found out that there is a newer version of Avast available and immediately tries to download this actual version -
which it cannot, as I did NOT connect may PC to the network (as I have NO Avast running currently).

So it really seems there is a vicious circle going on pretending me from installing Avast on my Win 2000 SP4 system.

Any more ideas...???

Tx, heppo

Set the System Time from Windows to May 2011 and start the Setup again. At this way, i could install the older avast! Version.
I couldn´t discribe it correctly in english, but this is a feature in the Version 6, to use the newest Version, if the Version 6 is older than 6 months.

Thanks for your statement, Coldviper!

That are exactly the same mistakes I have on my system, when trying to install V7.

Hope, the guys from avast!-team will help us soon... ???

Finally got it working.  Up till now, the webrating thing installed, and Avira Avast acted like it had installed, but no icon on lower right, and clicking on the Avira icon didn 't do anything.  The trick was, you need to install Windows 2000 SP4 Update Rollup 1
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=18997
Then Avira Avast starts working.

Yar!  Brain bubble from trying so many AV programs trying to find one that would work. Need more rum for full pirate mode.
