[SOLVED] Avast 7 Web Shield blocks web browsing

I have upgraded from Avast 6 to Avast 7 on my Windows 7 64-bit laptop.  I could no longer browse the web with Chrome nor IE.  If I disable the Web Shield in Avast 7, I can browse the web again.

I have already tried to uninstall Avast 7 and re-install it again.  Still the same behavior; can't browse the web if Web Shield is enabled.

Given that all was working well with Avast 6 prior to the upgrade, what should I do to get Web Shield working again with Avast 7?

just to confirm, did u use the Avast! uninstallation utility? standard windows uninstaller is not sufficient to remove antiviruses. a complete uninstall is needed to ensure problems with previous corrupted installs are eliminated.

if u did not run the uninstallation utility follow the following steps.

1. Download a fresh Avast! 7 package from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (to reduce chance of corrupted install)
2. uninstalling Avast! the normal way with windows
3. run Avast! uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (please do it in SAFE MODE!   )
4. run the uninstall utility (2 TIMES) total, one for Avast! 7
5. reboot and go into safe mode once more, second time for Avast! 6
6. reboot again, this time to normal windows mode
7. install the fresh package
8. please report ur findings here =)

Thank you for your prompt reply.  I have tried the suggested steps but with no luck.  I am still stuck with Web Shield blocking my web browsers.

One off topic observation though.  After the reinstall, the register button did not work.  I had to reboot the laptop after the install to be able to register Avast 7.

Back to the topic, if the recommended procedure did not work, what is the next step for me to get Web Shield working again on Avast 7?  Given other people have reported Web Shield working on Avast 7, could it be some problem specific to "Windows 7 64-bit"?

Found the problem.  I am also using Online Armor as my software firewall.  All was good with Avast 6.  However, after the installation of Avast 7, for a very obscure reason, Online Armor has added a rule to block outgoing port 80 for one of the Avast 7 executable.  After deleting that rule, Web Shield started to work again.

Once again, thank you for your help.  Hopefully, my discovery with Online Armor may be helpful to other people.

That is the most common cause a firewall blocking avast and not avast blocking the internet. When a program update happens processes are changed and that may trigger your firewall to block said changed processes (depending on your firewall and its settings). That won't have changed by reinstalling the program as the components would still be changed.
