I had the same issue, it seemed to be updating on it's own though. Sadly that's where my issues really started! add remove programs will not remove avast!. nor will the removal tool, although I didn't try in safe mode tbh. I had to restore to a previous image. Will leave for now as had a years worth of issues in 8 hours!

I have a similar problem.
In Win7 32bit I tried to update AV6 to 7 from within the prog and it just froze.
I then downloaded the latest version and ran it. It reported that it could not read system info, the last operation was 'spawning'.
I tried uninstalling, using cccleaner, and got the same error message.

Is there a way to remove Avast if the uninstaller doesn't work?

Try ( avast Uninstall Utility ) ...
http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

1 - Start Windows in Safe Mode
2 - Open (execute) the uninstall utility
3 - If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
4 - Click REMOVE
5 - Restart your computer

if u have code 11 error and still have the error u posted at the start of the topic, please reinstall Avast! 7 from scratch

1. Download a fresh Avast! 7 package from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (to reduce chance of corrupted install)
2. uninstalling Avast! the normal way with windows
3. run Avast! uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (please do it in SAFE MODE!   )
4. run the uninstall utility (2 TIMES) total, one for Avast! 7
5. reboot and go into safe mode once more, second time for Avast! 6 (this is because i noted u have updated to Avast! 7 from Avast! 6)
6. reboot again, this time to normal windows mode
7. install the fresh package
8. please report ur findings here =)

basically code 11 error is the updatefix.exe way of telling u that theres no problem at ur side

The fix tool has been updated and should solve the error 2 and 11 problems http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=94514.msg752850#msg752850
