1. download and run Avast! uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (please do it in SAFE MODE!   )
2. run the uninstall utility (2 TIMES) total, one for Avast! 7
3. reboot and go into safe mode once more, second time for Avast! 6
4. reboot again, this time to normal windows mode
5. Download a fresh Avast! 7 package from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (to reduce chance of corrupted install)
6. install the fresh package
7. please report ur findings here =)

Don't forget to disable the: self defense module.  You will find it by pressing the setting button.  If that fails to work and you use the uninstall utility, make sure you run this as an Administrator.

Hope it helps.

I did manage to uninstall using the above method. However, after installing Avast 7 it will not update when using either the 'Definitions or Program' update tabs. It just hangs. It will also not uninstall using 'Programs>Program & Features'. I have to uninstall using the above method to get Avast to uninstall.

I am having a similar problem . I keep getting an error that says "Error reading product data from 'C:\part-setup_ais-ffffffff.vpx'. Setup cannot continue." This pops up any time Java tries to boot. I've completely uninstalled Java and Avast and this error still pops up every time I use Java again despite having Avast uninstalled. Any suggestions?

That is what "safe mode" is for.  :)
