I click on the link and the pop up for open, save, etc. appears for only 1 to 2 seconds then disappears. I caught it in time once and clicked on save then chose 'desktop'. The download looked like it was happening but then nothing appeared on my desktop so I can't update my version (6.0137) and I can't download the fix. I need help!

Unfortunately, while Avast was updating to 7, windows 7 was trying to do an update at the same time.  A FUBAR occurred, and the pc locked up.  I rebooted and got a blank screen when starting win. normally.  So, rebooted into safe mode, and went to an earlier restore.  This did not fix Avast as it will not repair and I cannot uninstall or remove it or install a new Avast either.   Any way to remove and reinstall?
Thanks for any info.

System restore in itself can screw up an avast installation.

A clean reinstall as outlined will remove it:
- Download the latest version of avast, 7.0.1426 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x).
  • 1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that, likely given your comments, then start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 6.x if previously installed and then for 7.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.

This relates to avast free, but you don't say what avast version you are using, free/pro/AIS ?

I did as you outlined and Avast was removed and I installed a new Avast.
Thanks a bunch for the quick reply,

I have a difficult-to-fix corrupted install on a Vista 64 laptop.

Looks like I'm a little late in the curve for the corrupted virus update to be the cause, probably happened on a free Avast v. 7 install on Sunday 3/11.  May have been a conflict with a new printer driver configuration.  I really don't have a lot of time on the PC to do forensics before it heats up and crashes, time after time.

Reading all the posts, and trying various things, I'm convinced I need to run aswClear.exe from Safe Mode to remove the corrupted install.  Nothing else has been effective so far.  However, I can't seem to get the program to run.  I get an error message that it is not a valid Win 32 application.

Dialog with Red X in a circle:  C:\(path)\aswclear.exe is not a valid Win32 application.  (OK)

I've tried every way I can think of, from a Windows file manager window, from a "Run" window, even a DOS prompt, always the same error, Safe Mode or not.  Since my time is limited on the target PC, I've also tried it on this XP laptop (no Avast install here to remove--would abort if I got it to run) with the same results.

Looking at the properties of the file on this PC, it is listed as "aswclear.exe", it is recognized as an Application by the OS, 113KB (116,573 bytes), taking up 116KB on the disk.  One intriguing thing, there is a radio button to "Unblock" the file below the file info, since "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer."  I've never run into this sort of Windows .exe file protection before, perhaps it is designed to block just this sort of low-level file execution.  I'll try this next and report back.  Then there's compatibility mode on the next tab--that shouldn't be an issue.

Filed a ticket with tech support last night, but no response so far.  Don't expect a lot with a free product.

This is incredibly frustrating.  My main PC is junk until I get this resolved, and for no good reason that I can find, the perfect little fix program won't run.  Please advise if anyone else has had trouble running this file, or if I'm missing something really simple.

Thanks.

Reporting back:

I still get the same error in Safe Mode (on this XP PC, not the target PC), "aswClear.exe is not a valid Win32 application."  I expect the result to be the same on the Vista PC, but it is much more difficult, time consuming, etc. to try.

The Unblock file attribute in XP seems to be a flag whether to confirm file execution with a dialog showing security certificate, file origin, etc., or execute the file without the confirmation step.

Any help would be appreciated.   :)

Jeff

113KB?
The file downloadable from the web (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) has 320KB... so maybe it's just truncated?

Interesting, now we're getting somewhere.

I see 317KB (you say 320KB) when I follow your link, but when I download the file, I get a file only 120KB on my disk.

A quick check of two previous downloads shows the 113KB I previously reported, and then a version only 103KB on my desktop.  No wonder the file doesn't run.

Igor, are you willing to send the file as an attachment to an email?  You should be able to click on the icon at left for my address.

Thanks.   :D

This has something to do with downloads from the link on the Avast page using the old copy of IE7 on my XP machine.  I tried the same download of the file using a likewise very old version of Firefox, and the byte count came out right.  Don't know how to do a CRC using Windows utilities, but I'm sure this will do the trick.

Same thing with an attempt to download the latest Avast! free release--whatever it can download in 1 second is all I get, about 100kb.  Doing it through CNET Download works, however.  Interesting.

Maybe I should install the AV software, pronto!

Thanks, all.   ;D

Have you tried with another browser?

Robin Keir published some nice small utilities for free.  The information I posted was from his Hash program http://keir.net/hash.html.  I also like his IP2 program which shows your external Internet IP as well as your machine's internal NAT IP, particularly nice for those with routers.  http://keir.net/ip2.html

His home page http://keir.net/index.html.

Hello tere5,

That is not a bug, avast definition update was occured during scanning and old definitions were deleted.
Don't worry about it.
