avast! 4 Home installation problem
« on: November 16, 2004, 02:45:23 AM »
 ???

I first installed Kerio Personal Firewall 4 (but not yet registered), then attempted to install avast 4 home.  When I double-clicked it on the desktop to install avast, setup shows up as a part of a box with two folders, with a paper transferring from one to the other, no writing at all. It runs for a very short time, then it errors out with a setup selft extract error message as follows:  "An error 82 (00000052) has occured. Last performed operation was extracting main.exe"

I have since uninstalled Kerio Personal Firewall 4 by using add/remove programs and also through "find files or folders" & I also followed a "manually remove components for Kerio Personal Firewall 4" from the Kerio website (all files, folders & registry entries were already deleted).  After following all of the above instructions, I then restarted & attempted to re-install avast (I deleted original download & downloaded again from scratch). I get the same two folders, but it runs a little longer before getting the error message.

Help!!!!!!

Can you search for 00000052 on the board?
You will find a lot of related threads... Just click on button 'search' at the top of the page...
Would any of them help you?

I did a search as you instructed, but it appears there is only a reply to the 00000052 error message in reference to a hijackthis log posting -- I also see several other 00000052 error message postings (problems), with no replies......

I am usually very computer literate, but I have to say I'm stuck on this one....

It could be a corrupted download.
Before trying to download again:
- Remove all cookies
- Remove all temporary files
- Remove all temporary internet files
- Delete everything in \windows\Downloaded Installations
- Delete everything in \windows\Downloaded Program Files

Before trying to install again:
- Run two online scanners
- Run Ad-Aware
- Run Spybot s&d
(fix/delete the things they find ofcourse)
- Disable everything that is running
- If needed (for safety), take out the plug to the internet

And make sure you are logged in as administrator when you are trying to install.

Let us know if you can install Avast this way.

Eddy:

I tried everything you mentioned (see above) I followed all the steps; I am still getting the same error message.

I tried two online scanners, then I installed & ran spybot, then adaware. I fixed/deleted what appeared on spybot, then I ran adaware.  It found nothing new.  I have attached the log file, if it might be helpful......

When you ask do I have administrator rights (logged on as administrator) if you mean am I part of a network -- I am not.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for all your help so far, though! I do appreciate it!

Can you try the build 4.5.531?
More informations here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=9007

After that, can you run a boot time scanning?
Did you disable System Restore?

Went to your link...... (for build 4.5.531)

Used the link to download http://www.asw.cz/misc/aswbeta.exe.  Tried save & open; both came up as if to install, but then got the error message that no avast! installation found on this machine.

As you might have noticed, I don't have as much free time to devote to this as I used to....

This is exasperating?  What do you guys think is the problem?

Thanks for all your help so far!

Try this:
- Login as admininistrator (XP Pro) or as user with admin rights (XP home)
- Run the Avast uninstall util from the website.
- Disable all applications that are running.
- Try to install Avast.

Let us know what other security softwre you have (or had)installed and what exact version of Windows you have.
(start > run > winver)

If it fails, check Avast's log file, the system log and the event log and let us know the error(s) there.
