To simplify, I've recorded a VIDEO of the problem: http://youtu.be/PlGNl09rkaw

I've tried rebooting, re-downloading the patch, updating through avast "update program" interface, scannning the PC for threats with both avast and malwarebytes, running as admin, etc... no change.

PC:
CPU: i7 930 (3,8GHz)
MB: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
RAM: 3x2GB DDR3 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 Corsair
HDD: Intel 320 120GB SSD, 2x320GB Seagate (Raid0), 1x500GB Seagate
PSU: Corsair VX650W
CASE: NZXT Hush
OS: Win7 x64 SP1,  updated
USER: Advanced user (system admin) with 15 years of experience, 100% stable PC.

1. download and run Avast! uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (please do it in SAFE MODE!   )
2. run the uninstall utility (2 TIMES) total, one for Avast! 7
3. reboot and go into safe mode once more, second time for Avast! 6
4. reboot again, this time to normal windows mode
5. Download a fresh Avast! 7 package from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (to reduce chance of corrupted install)
6. install the fresh package
7. please report ur findings here =)

That did it. Thanks  :)

EDIT: And now I can't update virus definitions. Stuck at "initializing, please wait..."  :-\

My system is very similar to Rayn's running Win7 64bit SP1.
Yesterday the update from Version 6 to Version 7 didn't conclude properly and Avast wouldn't work.
So I went back to an earlier Restore point and now have Version 6.0.1367 back again. Unfortunately this isn't working either.
The Fix Button doesn't work. The Start Program button doesn't work.
The Shields are all disabled. If I try to start them the message is Shield Unreachable.
If I try to update either the virus definitions or the program the message says that the Avast Service is not running.
If I go into Settings-Troubleshooting the Self-defense module will not turn off.
On the Subscription page no licence details are showing so I tried to insert the license file (license.avastlic) and receive the message No Valid Licence Content Found.

So I thought I would try to uninstall the program and do a reinstall. That doesn't work either.

Unistall doesn't work from the Control Panel and the message says Error reading Product Data. Set up cannot proceed.

I downloaded the uninstall utility aswclear.exe. When I try to run it from Safe Mode it doesn't work and the message is Not a Valid Win32 Application.

Does anybody have a clue what is going on?
