Avast IS 7.0 requires restart every time I update!
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:37:45 AM »
Hello everybody, I 've just installed Avast Internet Security version 7.0.1426 last night! Everything is ok! However, there are two problems that are making me crazy
1. I cannot connect to Avast Account on Avast's user interface.

2. Every time I update Avast in manual mode, it requires computer update, although the update is just "update of virus definition" and is not very essential. When using Avast 6 and previous versions of Avast 7, this does not not happens.

Hope everybody will help me solve these problems soon. thanks in advance!
I am using Windows XP SP3!

Hi
You're not alone on the Account service unavailable issue. I'm getting the same thing every time.

I haven't tried a manual update but the update-restart shouldn't be necessary very often. The only usual issue would be if a particular update that does need a restart can't be (or is not recorded by avast! as having been) applied for some reason. Have you tried a "Repair" of avast! in "Add/Remove Programs"?

if that does not work, i suggest
1. Download a fresh Avast! 7 package from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (to reduce chance of corrupted install)
2. uninstalling Avast! the normal way with windows
3. run Avast! uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (please do it in SAFE MODE!   )
4. run the uninstall utility (2 TIMES) total, one for Avast! 7
5. reboot and go into safe mode once more, second time for Avast! 6 (skip this if you have not install Avast! 6 on that computer previously)
6. reboot again, this time to normal windows mode
7. install the fresh package
8. please report ur findings here =)

I think this is one of the bug of Avast 7. I need to wait for the Avast Develop Team to fix this error! Like the previous version of Avast 7, it is impossible to get updates for the program!

Ignore the advice given to upload/uninstall anyth

The reason for your issue is that the my.avast servers were down(again) which prevents the registration working. At the moment the servers are again working so your problem should be over.

Edit: Sorry but the my.avast.com servers are yet again offline, it seems that they are only capable of running for 5 minutes per day !

and now at 13.00GMT the system is working again.

Avast staff, this is really unacceptable. You introduced this new system and require registration therefore the infrastructure should have been fully in place and proven prior to the release of avast7. You have created a host of problems, caused a great deal of frustration and inconvenience to customers both new and old. This is not doing your reputation any good at all and has already cost you the loss of a large number of users.

This my.avast system needs to either be fully working or shut down and the registration requirement removed.

And yet again the my.avast site is throwing errors/not available. >:(

Well, this has now cost avast! the loss of hundreds of installs a month, the workshop owner I help out has 4 other sites across the South Coast of the UK and has now ordered all the sites to drop avast permanently.

There is no way they are going to spend time registering free applications, the time involved is better spent on other work and now they are faced with avast installs that can't be registered/won't install.

There is a lot about avast that is excellent but this fiasco with updates/registration and intermittent cloud services is truly ridiculous.

That's the thing about a company that insists on playing the "Emperor's New Clothes" game (i.e. everything is wonderful, we don't have to change anything, etc.) -- eventually, reality comes in and asserts itself. A good company listens to its customers and responds accordingly. (i.e. average users are not interested in a product that has to be constantly uninstalled/reinstalled; they want an a/v product that they install and that updates its virus signatures automatically, and that consistently protects their computer) A company that insists on deflecting legitimate complaints and refuses to acknowledge and fix those issues will lose a part of its loyal user base. Whether that loss translates to a significant loss or not remains to be seen. But as you have pointed out, this latest release is causing a certain number of Avast users to switch to other products.

In this instance, the decision to incorporate the new registration/account structure, without the Avast servers being able to handle the new implementation, is causing undue problems and needed to be addressed before the new version was launched. It was not adequately addressed, and now the problems are mounting. If the only way to keep the account registered is not to turn off the computer, as has been suggested, then that is not an acceptable "workaround".

btw. why it is THAT important if this function works or not? so far as i have seen there can the serial number when registered over the web entered in some kind of offline way too... at least shown on the avast site - and here updates work even if i am not connected.

And btw. updates are working here without problems, even without being connected to that new feature, and no need for constant reboot after an updated has been finished.

But of course things should have been cleared up first before releasing such a feature.  But in the end, technology often does fail anyway, so whats the big deal :D

The thing which DOES for real annoy quite much is that god damn captcha verification stuff... that damn latters can only be read very hard... that should be truly changed.. Because klicking 100000 times before you can FINALLY read a set of words... that sucks big time... ;)

The my.avst server is REQUIRED to be running so that new installs can be registered and work.
