I've managed to invoke the issue several times but i was having problems capturing the memory dump. The main problem was that when whole thing locked up on startup because Base filter service failed to initialize also causes all exercuted apps to be blocked in the meanwhile.
So when i wanted to execute the app pk provided, the app didn't start until the Base filter service started. In which case i have nothing to capture anymore. I'll try to figure this out somehow. Maybe by tossing the app into startup folder so it will start asap.

@RejZoR, do you execute the app from your local HDD?? If you do, there's no reason why BFE would block it.

When I had this problem about half of windows own utilities and tools would not launch, no admin tools etc. I would guess more things were being blocked or extremely delayed to the point of giving up.

After disabling the 'Load avast! services only after loading other system services' from the troubleshooting menu, I was able to recreate the BFE hang after only two reboots.

I now have a 47 MB memory.7z sitting on my desktop. Where do I upload this?
I'm reluctant to place it somewhere on a public location since I have no clue as to what personal information might be in there.

I couldn't capture the issue at all. Hopefully your memory dump will help. In my case the issue happened several times but now it just stopped, like they fixed something with VPS, because i haven't changed anything on my system...

Thanks, your dump helped. It seems, there's BFE deadlock in our aswrdr2 driver. We'll look at it.

Ditto. Brand new laptop (I was almost going to send it back) with Windows 7 64-bit, 128gb crucial m4 ssd.

Same problem here! Using win7 x64 with SSD (Vertex 2) and Base Filtering Engine failing to start. I am using avast 7.01426. Let me know if you require a memory dump.

I just ran into this issue today. The BFE service was getting stuck in the "Starting" status. I needed a production machine and didn't have time to wait around for the problem to get resolved, so I figured out a workaround.

Uninstall the "Network Shield" component from Avast!, reboot and the problem is solved. Even though I didn't have time to provide debugging data, this should at least give the Avast! team a place to start looking.

Just came across this thread, and I was having this exact same issue, spent like 2 days trying to figure out what the heck was going on. Soon as I uninstalled Network Shield, BASE filtering engine started properly and my computer was back to normal.

thanks!

I just registered to say "me too". Same problem on two different systems with Avast Free 7.0.1426, both with Crucial SSDs (one C300, one M4), if it matters. Happens about once in 10 - 20 startups, or in other words it happens regularly but I cannot replicate it reliably.

I'm hesitant to let it installed on one of the two. It's a custom build for somebody not too tech-savvy, and while I like Avast, having it basically not work every 15th startup is kind of a deal-breaker here.

Hi guys,
you could apply the following patch, while waiting for next Avast update. This should solve this BFE Start problems.

Just did 20 restarts with the patch installed on one system (Win 7 64bit) - no problems. I can't test the other right now because it's disassembled, but to me the bug seems fixed.

Great work and great support. Thanks!
