Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

Whilst attempting this repair you may get an error displayed, report that error in your next post if it happens.

Try this - avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 31MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.

Note: Ignore the file name in the images of the page that is displayed after clicking the download link, they are for the main program, not for vpsupd.exe which will be downloaded.

What don't you understand ?

This is the full virus definitions and should overcome the problems with being unable to update.

Given the other topics you have created, I'm at a loss what is going on with your system as some including this could be an indication of malware blocking activity.

If you went to that site and played around there - you may well have an infection

If you play with fire you will get burnt

well i know that site is not a virus because i checked task manager and scanned for viruses and it appears that site is clean(no viruses) so the site is still a dangerous threat.

well only avast failing to update which i noticed to happen oddly. maybe the bat file i was playing with (gotten by making it) stop avast from updating. which happend when my bat restarted my computer and oddly avast stopped automaticly updating
