All computer icons gone since avast update

I got a pop up saying i needed to upgrade my avast pro anti virus. I did this but after my computer restarted all my computer icons are gone from the screen. All i can now do is log on and thats it. Ant help would be great thanks.

I can only force shut down the computer as all i can see on my computer is my screen saver picture. I have shut down a few times and can then only log in but still the same with no icons.
