Configuring Avast with Flashget/AIM
« on: December 12, 2004, 05:09:40 AM »
Hi,

I would like to configure Avast to scan downloaded files once they're complete in flashget and AIM.  Which .exe program do I need to chose, and what are the arguments I have to pass to the scanner?

Thanks

I put this in Flashget's Options / file manager section:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe

and it works fine for me (hint: make sure your ashquick.exe is in the same path).

also, in the avast settings page, you may want to set avast up with these check-marks, so that you get an avast pop up menu showing virus results after Flashget downloads your file (s).

I discussed the use of FlashGet and avast with Igor.
The conclusion: FlashGet bugs and the way it sends commands to a third party application (use of blank spaces in the name or path, etc.).

We did not find a solution  :-[  :-\

I must be lucky because it's working perfect for me!  i.e. the avast virus scan pop-up window of the flashget downloaded file works superbly.  ;D

Then again, I'm using an old copy of FlashGet v. 0.96a (registered), Win 98 SE and of course avast! 4.5 (home)--using the default silver skin panel.   I couldn't be happier.

Enabling "scan created/modified files" and "all" in the standard shield provider should make Avast scan them.

Maybe the old version...
Maybe you're not downloading a file with blank spaces into its name or path (where saved)... If you try, maybe you won't see the splash screen of ashQuick.exe.
Anyway, the Standard Shield will caught any virus in the downloaded file  ;)

Hmmm..... well I decided to see what would happen if I d/l a file with blank spaces (or path) as you say.  But it still works fine!  ;D   I dunno, maybe I live in the Bermuda Triangle   ;)

It's funny...sometimes with computers things don't work, and you can't figure it out, but when they do work, that can be a bit of a miracle.

What did you add into FlashGet options?

Just this?
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe

or
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe"

or even something like this
C:\Progra~1\Alwil~1\Avast4\ashQuick.exe

Just this:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe

(so no quotes, just that single line).

So, if you can do it, the problem is on the FlashGet version  :'(

Yup.  I guess it's another case of newer isn't always better  ;)

My FlashGet program (ver. .96a) came bundled on an install CD for my Aopen FM-56PX modem.  Only thing I had to do was to use Spybot S&D to remove the spyware that it came with... (aureal etc).  Works fine thereafter.
