The issue appears to have been fixed in newer versions of Avast (e.g. v9.0.2013).

The problem described in this thread was finally addressed (or at least it stopped being a problem), but was reintroduced with Avast 2014.9.0.2021!

Avast 2014.9.0.2021 prevents MS Word from SAVING the file being edited, which results in total loss of the file (since MS Word, like all word processors, saves the work file, deletes the named file, and then renames the work file as the named file). Apparently Avast prevents the rename operation from completing.

Uninstalling Avast 2014.9.0.2021 (via control panel) and re-installing Avast 2014.9.0.2018 "solved" the problem, but 2014.9.0.2021 is unusable for anyone with MS Word 2000 or 2003 (and most likely later versions of Word).

Please address and fix this problem as soon as possible. Thank you.

For what it's worth, it seems to work okay with Word 365 at the moment.

I have Windows XP SP3 with Word 2007 and Avast free 2014.9.0.2021 and do not have any problems saving or editing documents.  I do not have Safezone, browser cleanup, secureline or software updater etc. installed so perhaps there is a connection.  I also use MBAM and have had no problems with version 1 or 2 with this setup.

I can confirm that the bug has indeed regressed and resurfaced in Avast v2014.9.0.2021.  Saving Word documents in FAT32 volumes will cause data loss and corruption.  I am going to try and see if it can be reproduced in v2015.10.0.2208.

I can reproduce the bug in Avast v2015.10.0.2208, unfortunately.

Me too. Thought Word was the problem till I saw this thread. I've been frequently saving sequentially numbered copies of anything I'm working on as a workaround.
Not only does it trash the working copy, it also leaves corrupted tmp files on the disk.
Word can't delete them - reports  them as "locked by another user".

Any timeframe in which to expect a fix for this? I don't want to leave write scanning disabled any longer than necessary.

So does anyone try the latest one (ver. 2015.10.0.2028)?

the problem makes me upset and currently I disable scanning doc/docx files in avast.

I am using avast 2014.9.0.2021 and wait for any solution. Thanks!

Still a problem for me with 10.0.2208

Also apparently very slow read-scanning files in folders on "Open" in Powerpoint 2003 and PPT.tmp files when saving.
