So it failed to reboot normally

From the command prompt type :

Bootrec /RebuildBcd

If it asks what partition it will need to be 1

Yes the space is right

I was hoping that the no OS indicator was wrong

Do you wish to back up data from this computer before you you re-install it ?

I am sorry we could not get you back up and running again..  Unfortunately we are always playing catch up with these miscreants and sometimes they win

It is a possibility, however, it would take an hour or so to burn the necessary disc and recovery could not be guaranteed

oh well, hopefully i have most of what i need on the external hard disk. is there any risk the infection could have been passed on too? hapy (sort of!) to go for the full restore now. HP assistant offers an option to reset to factory settings.

If you go for the factory option it will in effect reformat the drive - so it would be the best to take

There should be no requirement as it will be as if you just received it

Yes close the prompt

Thanks for your help essexboy. shame we did not splat them, felt really satisfying last night when tdsskiller kept finding threats. thought we had it sorted, but alas.
will go for factory restore and begin the long tedious procedure of finding my entire life all over again lol.

sorry, one last question. i have two options:

a) System Recovery - Restore your computer to its original factory condition
b) Minimized Image Recovery - Restore operating system, drivers and select software only (clean image)

was going to go for a) but thought i'd check

if i choose a) it says

This process will reinstall the original factory image on the system partition but will not perform other hard drive changes. If you want to restore Recovery Partition as well - use Factory reset.
All user-created files and programs installed after purchase will be lost.

saying that, i do not see the factory reset option , just the two listed

OK, so I have started from scratch again. Did a backup before which I have on an external drive. If I plug it in and select Computer I can see the drive, can select it and can see the backup folder with files in. But if I go to the backup and restore menu, then go to choose which files to restore it does not find the drive?
Don't want to restore everything, just certain files. But can't seem to do it.
Can I just copy (CTRL C) the folder? but then, as i said, i don't want all the files.

any help appreciated

Copy the entire folder to your desktop
Extract the files that you want and then delete the folder from the desktop
That should do it
