Internet mail suddently timing out
« on: September 20, 2005, 06:21:35 PM »
Suddenly, the internet mail is timing out when connecting to my pop3 provider.  If I turn off the internet mail protection, my mail client is able to connect just fine.  POP3 address is pop3.covad.net:110.

NOTE:  If I try using telnet to go to that address, without internet mail provider running, the POP3 welcome banner comes up after hitting return, with internet mail provider running, the banner never shows up.

What would help is the email program you are using?

Have you tried increasing the timeout delay?

Outlook 2000, Outlook 2003, telnet to port 110, doesn't matter.

Timeout set to 4 minutes, still no difference.

If you terminate the Outlook/Exchange plug-in are you able to connect without timeouts?

I assume that you increased the timeout in Outlook not avast and you are using the Outlook/Exchange plug-in?

Sorry I haven't used Outlook since Office97 so I'm not familiar with Outlook 2000 and 2003.

Oops, getting senile ;D
Seriously though seeing this "without internet mail provider" surely you don't need the Internet Mail provider enabled since you are using MS Outlook not OE, you only need the Outlook/Exchange plugin I believe, or do you use that as well?

I'm using Outlook to pull down from a POP3/SMTP server.  Not sure if I need both enabled or not.  If I disable internet mail, will it still scan messages that come in via POP3?

I don't use Outlook so I can't say for sure, but as far as I'm aware the idea of a plugin is to allow integration directly so this shouldn't require the Internet Mail provider, which is acting outside as a local proxy.

All you need do to check is open the Outlook/Exchange detailed view and you should be able to see the Last Scanned: change and the Scanned Count: increase if it is working, e.g. scanning your email.

MS Outlook (full, not the Express) needs the avast! Outlook/Exchange plugin to scan email (inbound or outbound).
The Bat! is another email client that has a specific plugin.
All other pop3/smtp email programs could use the Internet Mail provider.
Using ONLY MS Outlook (full) you don't need the Internet Mail provider.

Let us know if your emails are being scanned as I mentioned above, you can also check the email headers to see if they have been scanned.

Something like this:
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0538-3, 20/09/2005), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

Yes, I turned off the Internet Mail provider and left the Outlook/Exchange provider running and it is still scanning the messages via POP3/SMTP in Outlook 2000.

In Outlook 2002, though, it does not work.  If the Internet Mail provider is stopped, the messages aren't being scanned (scanned count in the Outlook provider doesn't increment) and no X-Antivirus tags in the header.

Thanks.

Ok, this is how it works.

Make sure the avast plugin is not disabled into MS Outlook:
> Help > About > Disabled items
or
> Tools menu > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Add-In Manager.
