AIS a/v definitions question

Do definition updates over write previous definitions or do they all accumulate? In other words do they take up more space on the hard drive?

The definitions do grow over time - then an update will prune them all down, as malware disappears or merges with other types
But the actual space taken (considering todays hard drive sizes) is minimal
